Comets Give Seventh-Ranked Raiders a Scare in a Close Matchup

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Capital University men's basketball hosted the #7 Purple Raiders from Mount Union tonight. Mount Union got out to an early lead, but the Comets were able to close the gap. Capital broke through the Purple Raider defense and took the lead after a step-back three from Dallas Tucker with 3:45 left in the first half. The Comets kept their lead going into half for a score of 35-31. Mount Union slowly chipped away at the Comet lead until they took back control with 15:16 left in the half. Capital kept it close but were unable to take the lead back, leading to a 75-63 loss.

The loss makes Capital 8-16 on the season and 3-12 in conference play. Winning moves Mount Union to 23-2 on the season and 14-2 in the conference.

It took the Comets some time to settle in. Both sides were playing aggressively on defense making it hard to find open shots. Capital found their stride toward the end of the first half and took the lead after an impressive step-back three from Dallas Tucker. The Purple Raiders got a bucket of their own but McKane Finkenbine fired right back with another three-pointer, allowing Capital to go into the half with a 35-31 lead.

Capital was able to maintain their lead early in the second half. The Purple Raiders fast pace of play allowed them to take back the lead, scoring 19 fast break points as a team. The Comets fought hard to stay in the game and despite a strong effort were unable to comeback, leading to a 75-63 loss.

The Numbers
Dallas Tucker led the Comets scoring effort with 17 points. 

McKane Finkenbine played well on both ends of the floor, scoring 12 points and leading Capital in assists and steals with 4 and 3 respectively.

Chris Mitchell led Capital in rebounds, bringing in nine. Mitchell also contributed eight points to the offensive effort.

Brody Gowen scored nine points and secured five rebounds for the Comets.

Julian Mitchell brought the defensive intensity, leading Capital in blocks with three.

Se'Ron Calloway-White scored eight points and brought in four rebounds. He also had a steal and a block on the defensive side of things.

Capital University men's basketball will travel north to Tiffin, Ohio to cap off their season against Heidelberg. The game is scheduled to tip-off at 1:00 pm on Saturday, February 21.
