Nicholasville, Ky. - It was opening day for the Capital University baseball team on Friday, Feb. 1, as they traveled down to Kentucky for the first of a three game set against Asbury University. The Comets offense flashed their power, hitting three home runs on their way to a convincing 21-6 victory. With the win, Capital begins the season 1-0. Meanwhile, Asbury falls to 3-1.
The Comets put the pressure on from the jump, scoring four runs in the top of the first. The first two runs of the inning would be by way of a
Robby Harrison RBI single and a ball put in play from
Ty Clifton. The big blow in the inning came from
Gio Mastrorosa, who ripped a two out double over the centerfield's head to score two more.
Asbury did not rollover, however, scoring one in the first and two more in the second to bring the score to 4-3 in favor of Capital. The Comet's offense did not falter, scoring two runs in both the third and fourth innings to stretch their lead once more. Sparking this run was sophomore
Bryce Kyees, who blasted a two run homer in the top of the fourth for the team's first home run of the season.
The remainder of the game would be dominated by the Comets, as a three run blast from
Ty Clifton in the eighth and a grand slam from
Grayson Gulley allowed them to cruise to the 21-6 victory.
Earning the win on the mound was senior
Noah Bromberg, who pitched five innings in relief of sophomore
Nash Andrix. Bromberg struck out four, allowing three runs in his first appearance of the season.
Tyler Bebout would close out the game, striking out three in two scoreless innings of work.
Ty Clifton led the high powered offense, recording four RBIs and four runs scored on three hits, two of which being for extra bases.
Robby Harrison would also finish his day with three hits, adding two RBIs and two runs scored to complete his line.
Leading the team with five RBIs was
Grayson Gulley, with four of them coming from his blast in the final frame.
