ALBION, Mich. – The Capital University women's soccer team left Michigan with a 1-0 win over Albion College on Wednesday evening thanks to an early second half goal from
Caitie Byars. The win propelled the Comets to 2-1 on the year, while Albion fell to 2-1 after enduring their first loss of the year.
Throughout the first half, Capital was the aggressor, but failed to put a shot past the Briton goalkeeper, despite taking 12 shots.
With the foot on the pedal going forward, the halftime intermission was all Capital needed to find the breakthrough. Just 44 seconds after the second half kickoff, the Comets went in front thanks to Byars' first Capital goal. The goal wasn't pretty, but showed a desire to get the goal scored. First,
Bella Leonetti put a ball across goal that was failed to be cleared by the Briton backline, and thanks to some pressure from
Ava Spirk, the ball fell kindly to Byars who roofed the shot from just two yards to account for the game's only goal.
From there, Capital kept up the chances, but settled in and preserved the win with ease. The Britons' best chance at scoring came with just just over six minutes left as
Liv Alford was forced into a sharp diving save to her left to keep out a shot.
In the end, Alford ended with three saves, earning her first shutout of the year. The two Albion goalies combined for six saves in the match.
