ALMA, Mich. – The Capital University volleyball team traveled to Michigan this weekend, playing on the road at Albion on Friday night before taking part in the Alma Invitational with two matches on Saturday. There, the Comets defeated Alma in a come-from-behind five-set victory that saw they earn their second win of the year. In the other two matches, Capital fell 3-0 to both Albion and Calvin.
Albion def. Capital, 3-0 (25-13, 25-15, 25-14)
The Comets did not have a great showing offensively to the Britons who contrarily hit at a highly efficient clip of .317 in what turned out to be a lopsided victory for the hosts.
Capital's leaders included
Ryann Bunyak in kills (4),
Carlee Thompson in assists (12) and aces (3),
Samaree Perkins in blocks (3) and
Abby Brunner in digs (7).
Capital def. Alma, 3-2 (25-19, 18-25, 23-25, 25-23, 15-10)
The Comets had their best offensive performance of the season in terms of both hitting percentage (.194) and kills (66) in the win over Alma. As a team, the Comets landed the 66 kills on 180 swings, leading to their best output of the season.
Leading the way was senior
Ryann Bunyak who landed a career-high 18 kills, followed by
Chloe Preocanin who also knocked down a career-high 16 kills.
Samaree Perkins and
Olivia Milton each had 11 kills as well.
Carlee Thompson easily set a new career-best in assists with 52 helpers.
Capital had seven service aces, with two each from
Abby Brunner, Preocanin and
Shy Black. The other came via
Reagan Irons.
In the back row, Brunner led the team with 26 digs, followed by Black with 15 and Preocanin with 10 pick-ups.
Emily Waites and Milton combined for the only block of the game for Capital.
Capital finally got the better of the pesky five-set match, winning their first five-setter since defeating Olivet, 3-2 on September 15, 2023.
Calvin def. Capital, 3-0 (25-23, 25-18, 25-13)
The Comets were immediately met with another tough match, playing against Calvin who had been receiving votes in the AVCA national polls all season to this point.
Olivia Milton was the team's leader with seven kills, followed by five from
Ryann Bunyak.
Carlee Thompson set up 14 assists for Capital.
Chloe Preocanin was the leader in the back row with 12 digs, followed closely by
Abby Brunner with 11.
Samaree Perkins finished with a solo block, while
Emily Waites and
Olivia Milton combined on another block.
