Bowling Opens Up Season With Two Competitions

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University men's and women's bowling teams opened up the 2025-26 season this past weekend, competing in two competitions – the DO Apparel/Brunswick Open on Saturday and the Capital Kickoff Classic on Sunday. Both events were held at HP Lanes here in Columbus. 

DO APPAREL/BRUNSWICK OPEN
The Comet men placed 8th of 12 teams in their season-opener after knocking down 4,838 pins. The JV men finished 8th of 11 teams with 4,438 pins. 

Individually, Zac Abbott led the team with a 652 series after throwing a high game of 223. 

Caleb Kornosky was next with a 570 score that featured a high score of 221. 

Jonathan Waggoner threw a 549 score, highlighted by a 189 high game. 

Baylee Becker bowled a 448 series with a high of 160. 

Jacob Snyder scored 314 pins across two games with a high of 170. 

Evan Freudemann bowled one game of 146. 

For the JV men, Christopher Vance threw the best series with a 539. Carlos Patterson had the top-game with a 224. 

The Comet women finished sixth of eight teams in their season opener, combining to score 4,295 pins. The score came on the heels of the team's new school record game of 944 pins in the second team game of the day. The Capital JV squad placed second overall with 3,548 pins in their division. 

Olivia Hicks led the Comets with a three-game series of 576 (215 high) which was good enough to earn her All-Tournament team honors. 

Cassidi Johnson was next for the Comets with a score of 514 pins thanks to a high game of 192. 

Kaitlyn Sturgell was next with a 458 series and a high game of 165. 

Jolene Powers bowled a 453 which included a high game of 200. 

Samantha Jay bowed two games of 172 and 143 for a 315 total. 

Sadie Bassit bowled one game of 146. 

For the Comet JV squad, Alyssa Gehring was the top bowler with a 404 series, while Emma McCaul highlighted the high game with a 159. 

CAPITAL KICKOFF CLASSIC
The Comet men placed second overall of five teams in the varsity division after the team fired off a combined score of 5,307 pins. In the JV division, Capital was fourth of six teams with 4,273 pins. 

At the varsity level, Zac Abbott was the top bowler, throwing a three-game series of 700, highlighted by a high score of 243 pins. 

Caleb Kornosky was next for Cap, tossing a series of 681 pins, highlighted by a 279 game. 

Baylee Becker was third for the Comets with a score of 659 after a high-game of 241 pins. 

Abbott, Kornosky and Becker all made the All-Tournament teams placing in the top-eight of the competition. 

Jacob Snyder was next for the Comets with a series of 645, followed closely by Jonathan Waggoner's series of 611. Snyder's high game was a 268, while Waggoner's top game was 220. 

The high series from the JV men came from Amir Alston who tossed a 570 pin score. The top game was also from Alston who had a 209 in the middle game. 

On the women's side, Capital finished third of five teams at the varsity level after combining for 4,195 pins. The JV women finished first overall in their division after combining for 3,573 pins. 

Samantha Jay was the top finisher after scoring 568 pins in the three-game series. Her top game was a 213. 

Close behind was Jolene Powers who threw a 561, highlighted by a high game of 207. 

Olivia Hicks finished with a 534 (199 high), and was just in front of Kaitlyn Sturgell who scored 531 pins (202 high). 

Cassidi Johnson bowled two games for a 333 (175 high) and Sadie Bassitt threw one game of 134. 

Samantha Jay and Jolene Powers were both All-Tournament finishers with Jay finishing as the event's runner-up. 

On the JV side, the top three-game series came from Alyssa Gehring who combined to bowl a 509. The high game of the afternoon also came from Gehring who opened with a 183. 

UP NEXT
Capital will next be in action at the Ohio Bowling Conference's first competition of the year on October 18th. That event will be held at the Columbus Bowling Palace at 9 a.m.
