Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Marcum’s Goal Lifts Women’s Soccer to Weather Shortened Win

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University women's soccer team benefitted from a 79th minute goal off the foot of Taylor Marcum to escape a pesky Kenyon Owls team who had entered the game unbeaten and yet to concede a goal through their first seven games this season. The 1-0 result bumps Capital's overall record to 5-2-1, while Kenyon is now 6-1-1.

The first half passed without incident as neither team truly tested the net. The best opportunity of the half from either side was a deflected clearance by the Kenyon attack that rattled the crossbar of the Capital goal, but ultimately neither team truly tested the goal offensively.

After halftime, Kenyon amped up the pressure on their end, but the Comets stayed composed defensively to mitigate many of their chances.

Absorbing the pressure, Capital started to come forward themselves in the 79th minute when Sofia Walton drew a free kick in the corner of the field. There, Taylor Marcum stepped up on the free kick and her service into the box evaded all defenders and snuck past the Kenyon goalie to make it 1-0 Comets. The goal by Marcum marked the first goal conceded by the Owls this season nearly 80 minutes into their eighth game of the season.

The goal came at the perfect moment for the Comets as weather rolled into the area just seconds after the ensuing kickoff, ending the game with 11:07 remaining. With the Comets ahead 1-0 at the stoppage, they sealed the victory.

Both teams took 10 shots each, with Kenyon casting three on frame – all of which were saved by Liv Alford – and the Comets shooting two on target, one of which was saved by the Kenyon goalie.
