COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University women's soccer team scored three goals in just a seven minute span of the second half of a 3-0 win over Ohio Wesleyan on Wednesday night. The win propelled the Comets to a 4-2-1 record this season, while OWU dropped to 3-3-2.
The first half proved to be tightly contested with neither team finding a goal. Capital did have the upper-hand with seven shots and 11 corner kicks, but little to show for it at halftime.
The Comets finally broke through just moments into the second half as
Bella Leonetti's third goal of the season made the score 1-0, Capital. The play developed as
Juli Sprague drew a foul at the top of the penalty area setting up a Comet free kick. The ensuing free kick was shot by
Taylor Marcum and saved by the OWU goalie, but Leonetti was there to slam home the rebound to put the Purple and White in front.
The goal from Leonetti put a shot in the arm of the Comets as they quickly doubled the lead through Sprague's second career goal. Sprague picked up the ball in the middle of the field and carried it up field before cutting to her left foot and shooting the ball in the lower left corner for the goal.
Capital kept their foot down on the gas pedal as they extended their lead with a third goal just minutes later in the 55th minute of action. Again Sprague and Leonetti were involved as Leonetti's cross was turned in at the near post by a one-time shot from Sprague. The goal lifted Sprague to three on the season, tying her for the team lead with Leonetti.
From then on, Capital kicked it into cruise control and kept the ball in the offensive half for much of the game and slowed the game down, closing out their second consecutive shutout win, thanks to strong defense all around and another four saves from
Liv Alford in the Comet goal.
