BALTIMORE, Md. – The Capital University volleyball team took part in the second day of the Greg "Gio" Giovanazzi Memorial Tournament hosted by Johns Hopkins University on Saturday. There, the Comets took on the hosts and No. 4 ranked JHU and Rowan University. Unfortunately for Cap, they dropped both matches via 3-0 scores.
Capital (0-3), fell to JHU (3-0) by scores of 25-13, 25-17 and 25-13. They then fell to Rowan (1-2) 25-16, 25-18, and 25-23.
GAME ONE vs. JOHNS HOPKINS
JHU showed Capital early why they are ranked in the top-five nationally as they hit the ball at a highly efficient .313 and landed 40 kills with just nine errors in the match. On the other hand, Capital managed just 23 kills on 95 swings for a .042 percentage.
Chloe Preocanin led Capital with 11 kills, followed by
Samaree Perkins who had six.
Carlee Thompson set up 16 assists, while
Abby Brunner added four.
Brunner chipped in 13 digs defensively, followed by Thompson with seven and Preocanin with six.
Ryann Bunyak, Perkins,
Abby Reed and
Olivia Milton each were in on a block.
Perkins recorded the lone service ace in the match for Capital.
GAME TWO vs. ROWAN
The Comets faced a difficult offense match in game two of the day as they hit a negative percentage over the three sets. On the other hand Rowan hit at a .136 clip to hold the edge. Additionally, Rowan held an upper-hand at the service line.
The Comet leaders in the match were
Ryann Bunyak with seven kills followed closely by
Olivia Milton with five kills.
Carlee Thompson facilitated the offensive with 18 assists.
Milton had herself a performance defensively at the net with a strong five blocks.
Abby Reed added four blocks herself.
Abby Brunner led the back row with 15 digs followed by six each from
Morgan Metzger and
Chloe Preocanin.
Thompson led the ace department with three.
Makenna Sullivan (2) and Preocanin combined for the other aces.
UP NEXT
Capital will return to Ohio for a five-game stretch this coming week. First, the Comets will play at Wooster on Wednesday, September 3rd and then the team will host the annual Pam Briggs Classic on Friday and Saturday. Capital will host a total of seven matches with Allegheny, Hanover, Centre and Stevenson making their way to The Capital Center for the annual event.
