MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Capital University women's soccer team opened up the 2025 campaign with a dominating 4-1 win at Allegheny on Friday night. The Comets got a goal in just the fifth minute on their first shot of the game from freshman
Juli Sprague and rode the early momentum from there to a comfortable victory.
Capital's offensive effort got big contributions from both
Bella Leonetti (two goals, one assist) and
Lizzie Elliott (one goal, one assist) to help lead the way.
The Comets got going in the fifth minute as a cross into the box was failed to be cleared by the Gators before freshman
Juli Sprague dispatched a strong shot past the Allegheny goalkeeper for her first career collegiate goal.
Capital stayed on the front foot for much of the first half, out-shooting the hosts 10-2. The effort paid off as the Purple and White doubled their lead in the 43rd minute. This time,
Bella Leonetti was the goal scorer as she dispatched a cross that came off passes from
Lizzie Elliott and
Kasey Duke.
The 2-0 lead held into the 54th minute as Allegheny got a goal on a penalty kick, making the score 2-1.
Despite allowing the goal, the Comets continued on the front foot offensively and added a third goal in the 72nd minute. This time
Lizzie Elliott was the goal scorer taking a pass from
Bella Leonetti.
Leonetti capped the scoring and the best offensive game of her young career with her second and the Comets fourth of the game in the 79th minute. This time, Leonetti took crosses from
Juli Sprague and
Ava Spirk to finish at the back post.
In the end, the 4-1 score would hold through the end of the game as the Comet defensive unit contained the Gators throughout. Goalkeeper
Liv Alford would finish the game with four saves with the lone goal conceded being the penalty kick.
Allegheny's goalkeeper Alex Augustine finished with six saves.
