NEW CONCORD, Ohio – The Capital University softball team traveled to Muskingum University on Wednesday afternoon where they would split results by falling in game one 8-0 and then rebounding for a 5-4 win in game two.
The results move Capital to 11-11 overall and 4-2 in the OAC, while Muskingum is now 9-11 overall and 5-3 in the conference.
GAME ONE
Capital faced one of their toughest pitching oppositions of the season in game one, only recording one hit in the game off the bat of
Reagan Irons.
Unfortunately for the Comets, the hosts had the bats going as well as they moved out to an 8-0 final score midway through the bottom of the sixth inning, ending the game at that scoreline.
Alyssa Miller (3-6) started in the circle, allowing seven runs on eight hits and a walk. She struck out two.
Addi Parker finished the game allowing an unearned run on one hit.
GAME TWO
The Comets played from in front in game two as they went ahead 2-0 in the top of the first.
Megan Parry doubled to right field to score
Kyleigh Kirby to get the game started. Then, Parry herself came around to score on
Megan Mlinaric's RBI single.
Muskingum scored an unearned run in the bottom of the first to make it 2-1 and then another unearned run in the third to tie it at 2-2.
Despite falling even on the scoreboard, Capital went back in front 3-2 on a sacrifice fly by
Lyndi Hemmelgarn that scored
Reagan Irons.
Again, Muskingum tied the game at 3-3 on another unearned run this time in the bottom of the fifth.
Despite the score, Capital got much needed insurance in the sixth and seventh. First, Irons delivered a sac fly of her own that scored
Tabi Bailey in the sixth. Then, in the seventh inning,
Kyleigh Kirby would hit her first home run of the season on a solo shot to center field. The run would put Cap in front 5-3.
Despite conceding a run in the bottom of the seventh, Capital hung on to win 5-4.
Megan Mlinaric (6-1) started on the mound, tossing five innings and allowing three unearned runs on five hits with three strikeouts.
Isabel Sayre made her pitching debut for the Comets, throwing the final two innings to pick up her first career save.
Kyleigh Kirby and
Reagan Irons each had two hits to go with one each from
Megan Parry and
Megan Mlinaric to account for the Comet hitting.
The home run for Kirby marked the 13th of her career, which moves her into a tie for eighth all-time at Capital alongside Amy Orahood who also hit 13 from 2000-2003.
