Baseball Rallies to Split with Muskingum

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University baseball team host Muskingum University at Huntington Park on Wednesday afternoon, where the Comets split results via a 6-5 loss and a 9-8 win. The Muskies had been receiving votes in the D3baseball.com national rankings for several weeks this season.

The results now set the Comets at 12-18 overall and 3-7 in the conference. The Muskies are now 19-7 overall and 5-5 in the OAC

GAME ONE
In the opening game, Muskingum went in front first 1-0 in the top of the third, but the Comets responded with a run in the bottom of the third to tie it 1-1. The run came on an RBI double by Ty Clifton that scored Charlie Colson

Then, in the bottom of the fourth, Capital scored three more to go up 4-1. The runs came on an RBI single from Bryce Kyees, an RBI double by Colson and a wild pitch that scored Michael Andryszczyk

After a Muskingum run in the fifth, Capital extended their advantage to 5-2 in the eighth on an RBI single from Andryszczyk.

Unfortunately for Capital, the Muskies would score four in the ninth to come back for the 6-5 win.

William Furry started on the mound and tossed seven solid innings, allowing just two runs on six hits and three walks with a strikeout. Casey Wilkins (1.2 IP, 3 R, 1 K) and Jared Carpenter (0-1, 2 H, 1 ER) picked up the relief.

The Comets had 11 hits in the game, led by three from Michael Andryszczyk and two each from Clifton and Kyees. Charlie Colson, Ryne McKinney, Gio Mastrorosa, and Grayson Gulley all had one hit each.

GAME TWO
The Comets kept seeing the ball well in game two, tagging 17 hits in their come-from-behind win in extra innings. The 17 hits was the team's second highest output of the season.

First, Capital scored in the second on an RBI single by Bryce Kyees. Then, Muskingum moved in front with three in the third and one in the fourth.

However, Capital responded with three of their own in the fourth to knot it at 4-4. The runs came thanks to a Muskie error, a sac fly by Andryszczyk and an RBI single by Clifton.

Muskingum then went back in front 5-4, but Cap responded in the seventh to tie it at 5-5 on an RBI squeeze bunt by Grayson Gulley

The Comets then moved in front themselves in the eighth at 7-6 on a sac fly by Mastrorosa and a RBI single from McKinney.

Unfortunately, Muskingum scored in the ninth to tie it at 7 and force extras.

In the 10th inning, Muskingum moved up 8-7, but left the door open for the hot-hitting Comets.

There in the bottom of the 10th, Capital tied the game as Mastrorosa's deep fly ball was dropped by the center fielder and scored Kielan LaMarr from second. Then, the next batter, McKinney, hit a sacrifice fly to nearly the same location on the field to score Ty Clifton and win the game for Capital.

Nash Andrix started on the mound, throwing three innings and allowing four runs on five hits and a walk. He struckout three. Ben Mohler (3.0 IP, 2K), Brian Young (2 IP), Drew Pfundt, and Jared Carpenter (1-1, 2 IP) picked up the relief work. Carpenter was able to even his record after recording the pitching decision in both games today.

The Comets were active at the plate with Ryne McKinney leading the way with a 4-for-5 performance. Bryce Kyees and Ty Clifton each collected three hits, while Charlie Colson and Kielan LaMarr each had two base hits. Gio Mastrorosa, Cole Boroff, and Grayson Gulley all had one hit each.
