Baseball Stumbles at John Carroll

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – The Capital University baseball team traveled to John Carroll on Monday to play a rescheduled doubleheader against the Blue Streaks where they unfortunately were upended by scores of 5-4 and 16-3.

The results bring Capital's record to 11-17 overall and 2-6 in the conference, while JCU improves to 15-9 (5-3 OAC).

GAME ONE
The Comets got out in front of game one with a run in the top of the first inning, but they could not sustain the lead in an eventual 5-4 loss.

In the first, Capital got the first run of the game on a sacrifice fly from Gio Mastrorosa that scored Charlie Colson

Then, the game's next three runs went the way of the Blue Streaks who went in front 3-1.
Capital got a run back in the top of the sixth as Michael Andryszczyk was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Robby Harrison scored on the play.

With the momentum, Capital tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the seventh as Bryce Kyees drew a bases loaded walk to score Ty Clifton

From there, Capital and John Carroll traded runs, leading to the eventual 5-4 final score. Capital's run came on a game-tying solo home run from Mastrorosa in the top of the ninth before JCU would walk it off in the bottom of the ninth on a bases loaded walk.

Trevor Woodyard started in the game, throwing five innings in an eventual no-decision. He allowed three runs on six hits and a walk with two strikeouts. Casey Wilkins picked up 1.1 innings of relief before Brian Young (0-3) finished the final two innings of the game.

Mastrorosa went a perfect 3-for-3 from the plate with two RBIs to lead the team at the plate. Robby Harrison collected two hits, while Charlie Colson, Kielan LaMarr, and Michael Andryzszcyk each had one hit.

GAME TWO
Capital fell behind early and struggled to gain much ground throughout the game despite recording 10 hits.

The best stretch of offense for the Comets came in the top of the fifth inning when Capital scored all three of their runs. First, things were kickstarted on a triple by Grayson Gulley. Michael Andryszczyk immediately followed with an RBI double to score Gulley. Andryszczyk then came around to score three batters later on an RBI single by Ty Clifton. The scoring for the Comets was capped on Gio Mastrorosa's RBI single that scored Kielan LaMarr

Despite that stretch of offense, Capital could not score any more runs as JCU eventually pulled away for the 16-3 win.

Of the Comets' 10 hits, Mastrorosa, LaMarr, and Clifton each had two, while Robby Harrison, Bryce Kyees, Gulley and Andryszczyk all had one.

Mastrorosa finished the day a combined 5-of-5 with three RBIs.

On the mound, Tyler Bebout (0-4) was tagged with the loss after giving up five runs on five hits and a walk. Ben Mohler, Drew Pfundt, Logan Detty, Colin Boldin, Jared Carpenter and Sam Everts picked up the relief effort.

UP NEXT
Capital will be back in action on Wednesday, April 9th as they host Muskingum University at Huntington Park, the home of the Columbus Clippers. First pitch of that doubleheader is slated for 12 p.m.
