WESTERVILLE, Ohio – The Capital University track and field team ventured across town to compete in Otterbein's annual Twilight meet. As is the case for many years, the meet finished late into the evening on Friday with results finalizing early Saturday morning.
The Comets performances were strong all around, but the highlight of the meet was
Cheik Souare setting a new school record in the 100-meter dash, which broke a precious mark that had stood since 1970.
In addition to Souare's record, the Comets put forth five other program top-10 marks on the day.
MEN
100-Meter Dash:
Cheik Souare ran a prelims time of 10.70 seconds to place fourth, setting him into the finals. In the finals, Souare ran a blistering time of 10.68 seconds which set a new Capital record in the event. His time beat Randy Pfeiffer's 55-year old mark of 10.69 seconds at the 1970 OAC Championship meet.
800-Meter Run:
Aiden Smith clocked a time of 2:14.62 in the event.
200-Meter Dash: Souare was at it again, this time in the 200-meter dash as he ran a time of 22.06 seconds which placed him seventh overall in the event.
5,000-Meter Run:
Mikey Arnone and
Kolin Brake placed 11th and 13th in the 5K fast heat. Arnone clocked a time of 15:40.87, while Brake finished in 15:44.99. Arnone's time was good enough to set him 10th all-time at Capital. In the other 5K race,
Zach Glotzbecker finished 16th (16:06.26),
Aaron McNutt was 34th (16:41.33),
Aiden Mahony was 36th (16:43.81), and
Jordan Hull was 60th (18:25.92).
Hammer Throw:
Nolan Piper placed ninth and threw a narrow personal best in the event, marking 49.77 meters, which bested his own 3rd Capital all-time throw in the event.
Discus:
Waylon Yeager finished 11th, throwing 40.07 meters. Piper was 12th in a mark of 39.82 meters.
Shot Put: Piper again competed in the shot, tossing a measure of 12.86 meters to place 13th. Yeager finished 20th after throwing 12.21 meters.
Long Jump:
Justin Mathews placed 26th with a jump of 5.89 meters.
Triple Jump: Mathews was at it again in the triple jump, this time placing fifth in the event with a jump of 13.15 meters. The distance was good enough to set Mathews ninth all-time in Capital history.
Pole Vault:
Jason McColl placed 22nd with a vault of 3.41 meters.
Javelin: McColl was at it again in the jav, throwing a distance of 43.44 meters. He placed seventh overall.
WOMEN
5,000-Meter Run:
Olivia Ellis ran a time of 19:49.25 to finish 10th in the 5K. That time was also fast enough to put her 10th all-time in the event at Capital.
Catherine Schaub was next for the Comets, placing 16th in 20:22.79.
Pole Vault:
Alex Wilkinson was 12th overall, clearing the bar at 3.19 meters. The mark was yet another improvement for Wilkinson who jumped up to fifth all-time at Capital in the pole vault.
Hammer Throw:
DeiVon McCullough threw a distance of 32.49 meters to place 16th.
Shot Put: McCullough was the top Comet in the shot, tossing 10.28 meters to finish 13th.
Mia Sanchez was 18th with a toss of 9.41 meters.
Discus: Sanchez finished 13th in the discus throw with a measure of 33.04 meters.
UP NEXT
Capital will now take a spin competing on the host track of the upcoming OAC Championships as they will head to Wilmington College for their second outdoor meet of the season on Saturday, April 26th. The Quakers will host the OAC Championships on May 1st and 2nd.
