COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University baseball team stormed back with seven runs in the ninth and tenth innings of game one to defeat Ohio Northern 11-10 in the doubleheader opener. The Polar Bears entered the game receiving votes in the D3baseball.com national polls and second in the OAC. In game two, despite another valiant comeback, Capital would fall 13-8 for the split.
Capital is now 14-22 overall and 5-9 in the OAC, while ONU moves to 22-8 overall and 10-2 in the conference.
GAME ONE
The Comets entered the bottom of the ninth inning trailing 10-4 in need of a jolt. Throughout the game, the Comets scored runs in the first on an advancement on a caught stealing, in the fifth on a groundout, in the sixth on another groundout and in the eighth on a sac fly.
In the ninth inning, the bats got going for Capital. First,
Cole Boroff walked then moved up on a fielder's choice by
Bryce Kyees.
Grayson Gulley was then hit by a pitch to load the bases with no one out. Two batters later,
Charlie Colson walked to score the first run. Then,
Kielan LaMarr delivered a two-RBI single. Then,
Ty Clifton walked to re-load the bases.
Robby Harrison then singled home two more runs to make it 10-9.
Ryne McKinney then delivered an RBI hit to tie it at 10-10 with just one out.
Two batter's later, it appeared the Comets would win it in the ninth as
Bryce Kyees deposited a hit to right center that scored
Robby Harrison. However, the umpires gathered a ruled a premature celebration did not result in the Comets' baserunners successfully advancing to the next base, thus ending the inning tied at 10.
After a smooth top of the 10th for Cap, the Comets gave it another go in the bottom of the 10th where
Ryan Brophy eventually scored the winning run on a walk-off single by
Kielan LaMarr.
Capital recorded nine hits – two each from LaMarr and Harrison. Colson, Clifton, McKinney, Boroff, and Kyees all had one hit.
Trevor Woodyard started on the mound and was relieved by a combo of
Ben Mohler,
Logan Detty,
Drew Pfundt,
Noah McMullen and
Jared Carpenter (2-1).
The win for Capital marked the third consecutive split doubleheader against teams receiving votes in the national polls (Muskingum, Mount Union and Ohio Northern).
GAME TWO
The Polar Bears got back in front 6-0 by the end of the second inning to play from in front the whole way.
Capital would get on the board in the fourth inning as
Bryce Kyees hit a two-RBI single to center, scoring
Robby Harrison and
Ty Clifton.
Another two runs came in the sixth as
Robby Harrison hit an RBI triple and then scored himself on a sac fly by
Cole Boroff.
Heading to the ninth, Capital found themselves behind 13-4, but would not go quietly. In the bottom of the ninth, the Comets scored runs on an RBI single by Boroff, an RBI single by
Gio Mastrorosa, an RBI fielder's choice, and a groundout by
Kielan LaMarr.
Capital collected 11 hits in the game – two each from Harrison, McKinney, Boroff and Kyees. Mastrorosa,
Diego Cancel and
Arnulfo Gonzalez accounted for the other hits.
William Furry (3-2) started on the mound and was relieved by
Tyler Bebout,
Brian Young,
Casey Wilkins,
Nash Andrix and
Sam Everts.
