Softball Hangs on to Sweep Heidelberg

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University softball team hung on and staved off a late comeback by the Heidelberg Student Princes on Tuesday evening, winning the two games by scores of 7-3 and 8-7.

Capital now evens up their record at 10-10 overall, while moving to 3-1 in the OAC. Heidelberg slips to .500 at 11-11 overall and 1-3 in the conference.

GAME ONE
Capital got in front early in game one and stayed there as the Comets played from in front all day. IN the bottom of the first inning, Megan Parry delivered the first run on a sac fly before Michelle Brumfield would single home Autumn Bridges to make it 2-0.

The Comets tacked on three more in the second inning to go up 5-0, with the inning getting started with a solo home run by Lyndi Hemmelgarn. The round-tripper was Hemmelgarn's second of the season and second of her career. Additional runs then came courtesy of some Berg miscues defensively as McKenzie Kennedy scored on an error and then Kyleigh Kirby scored on a squeeze bunt by Emma Sweetman.

After a Berg home run made it a 5-3 game, Capital added two insurance runs in the third inning again, thanks to some Berg errors. First Brumfield scored on an error and then Kyleigh Kirby singled home Hemmelgarn as the inning was extended with errors.

Alyssa Miller started in the pitchers circle and went 3.1 innings and allowed three runs on four hits and five walks. She had two strikeouts. Addi Parker (2-4) came in to finish off the final 3.2 innings and kept the Student Princes off the scoreboard, ending with three strikeouts of her own.

Kyleigh Kirby was 3-for-4 to lead Cap in game one, joined by multi-hit games from Autumn Bridges and Lyndi Hemmelgarn. Michelle Brumfield added the other Comet hit.

GAME TWO
Again, Capital got themselves in front in the first inning thanks to a RBI single by Megan Parry. A sac fly from Michelle Brumfield then scored another, making it 2-0 by the end of the first.

The Comets then added three more in the fourth inning on an RBI single from McKenzie Kennedy and a two-RBI triple by Kyleigh Kirby

A Berg homer again cut into Capital's lead, but the Comets responded to stay in front. Kelcie Schnitzler delivered an RBi single in the fifth to make it 6-2.

Heidelberg made things interesting in the sixth, trimming it to 6-5 before a two-RBI single by Reagan Irons gave Capital some crucial breathing room heading to the seventh.

After the visitors made it an 8-7 game, Alyssa Miller came in to record the final out on a strikeout to earn her first career save.

Megan Mlinaric (5-1) earned the win throwing 5.1 innings and allowing seven hits and five runs with four strikeouts. Addi Parker tossed 1.1 innings of relief, while Miller recorded the all important final out for the save.

Michelle Brumfield went 3-for-3 from the dish, joined by McKenzie Kennedy with two hits. Kyleigh Kirby, Autumn Bridges, Emma Sweetman, Megan Parry, Reagan Irons, Lyndi Hemmelgarn and Kelcie Schnitler all had one base hit.
