COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University softball team used a game two rally to pick up their first win of the season thanks to a walk-off run scored by
Shelby Allen on a wild pitch. The 4-3 game two win avenged their narrow 5-3 loss in the opening game against Grace College on Saturday afternoon.
The Comets now sit at 1-1 on the year, while Grace is 4-2 overall at this point in the season.
GAME ONE
The Comets went behind 4-0 in just the first inning as the squad got their feet under them in the season-opening contest. Despite trailing, Capital got a run back in the bottom of the first on an RBI double from
Megan Parry.
Two innings later,
Emma Sweetman would pick up an RBI double of her own that scored
Kyleigh Kirby.
A Grace home run in the fifth would extend their lead to 5-2, but Capital would get back one more consolation run on an RBI groundout by Parry, leading to the final score of 5-3.
Addi Parker (0-1) made her collegiate debut on the pitcher's rubber, lasting 4.2 innings and surrendering six hits, five runs, three walks and two strikeouts.
Megan Mlinaric threw 2.1 innings of relief, allowing just two hits while striking out five.
At the plate,
Kyleigh Kirby accounted for three hits, while
Autumn Bridges,
Emma Sweetman and
Megan Parry each had one base knock.
GAME TWO
Capital fell behind 2-0 in the first inning and then 3-0 by the end of the second inning as Grace plated runs early, much like they did in the opening game.
Despite flailing behind though, Capital remained poised and got back into the game with a run in the bottom half of the second.
Keaura Shilling laid down an RBI sacrifice bun that scored
Michelle Brumfield from third.
Trailing just 3-1, Capital saw themselves needing offense in the fifth. There, they got just that as
Megan Mlinaric helped the cause with a two-RBI hit to left that plated Brumfield and
Emma Sweetman.
With the scored tied 3-3, the game went to the bottom of the seventh where the Comets worked a bases loaded situation thanks to a walk from Sweetman, a single from
Megan Parry, and a bunt single from Brumfield. There, the wild pitch allowed pinch runner
Shelby Allen to score from third to win the game.
Megan Mlinaric (1-0) picked up the win in relief as she threw 2.1 innings of scoreless work, allowing just three base runners.
Alyssa Miller earned her first career start, finishing her mound debut going 4.2 innings and allowing nine hits, three runs (two earned) and two walks.
At the plate,
Kyleigh Kirby and
Megan Parry each had two hits, while
Michelle Brumfield, Mlinaric,
Lyndi Hemmelgarn, Miller and Kelcie Schnizler each had one hit.
