COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University softball team split a Tuesday doubleheader with The College of Wooster this afternoon, winning game one 2-0 before dropping the second game 14-3.
Capital is now 2-2 overall, while Wooster is 2-4 on the year.
GAME ONE
The Comets got their offense going in just the first inning as they scored the only two runs of the game in that first frame, before a dominant combination of pitching from
Alyssa Miller and
Megan Mlinaric combined to shutout the Scots of Wooster.
First,
Autumn Bridges singled and moved over to third on a throwing error and an infield single by
Kyleigh Kirby. With two on,
Emma Sweetman drove in Bridges from third thanks to a single to left.
A few batters later, Kirby would come home to make the score 2-0 as she scored on a fielding error by the Wooster third baseman on a hit from
Michelle Brumfield.
From there, neither team could score additional runs despite threatening on multiple occasions.
For Capital, it was the combo of Miller and Mlinaric in the pitcher's circle as Miller earned her first career collegiate win, tossing 4.1 innings and surrendering just three hits and two walks while striking out five hitters. Mlinaric closed out the final 2.2 innings to earn the save as she allowed just one hit and struckout four.
At the plate, Sweetman was the only multi-hit player with two hits, joined by Bridges, Kirby,
Megan Parry, Mlinaric, Brumfield,
Reagan Irons and
Kelcie Schnitzler with hits.
GAME TWO
The Scots came out the gates firing on all cylinders in game two, scoring 14 runs to Cap's three.
The Comets would get their runs on an RBI double from
Megan Parry in the bottom of the first and a two run error by the Wooster defense that scored
Lyndi Hemmelgarn and
Michelle Brumfield. Unfortunately from there, Capital could not muster any additional scoring despite seven hits.
In the pitcher's circle,
Addi Parker (0-2, 1.0 IP) started in the circle, while
Megan Mlinaric (1.2 IP) and
Alyssa Miller (3.1 IP) concluded the game.
At the dish,
Kyleigh Kirby and
Megan Parry each had two hits, while Brumfield, Hemmelgarn, and
Autumn Bridges had one base knock each.
