CINCINNATI, Ohio – The Capital University softball team ventured to Cincinnati on Thursday afternoon to play a very good Mt. St. Joseph's team for two games. Unfortunately for the Comets, they were on the wrong end of 9-1 and 10-2 scorelines.
Capital is now 2-4 overall while MSJ is 10-4.
GAME ONE
Capital got on the board early with the first two batters getting a run home. First,
Kyleigh Kirby led off the game with a double to right field and then she scored on
Emma Sweetman's RBI single up the middle.
Despite going in front 1-0, Capital could not force another run as MSJ would score nine unanswered to take the five-inning win, 9-1.
At the plate, Capital got hits from Kirby, Sweetman,
Michelle Brumfield,
Megan Mlinaric and
Reagan Irons, while
Megan Parry and
Kelcie Schnitzler each drew a walk.
In the pitcher's circle,
Alyssa Miller (1-1) started the game and tossed 2.1 innings giving up six runs (four earned) on seven hits and two walks. She did strikeout a pair though. Mlinaric pitched 2.1 innings of relief, allowing three runs (two earned) on two hits and two walks with one strikeout.
GAME TWO
Capital's offense couldn't get the runs going at all in the second game until the fifth inning after already trailing 10-0. Despite being down, Capital didn't quit as they scored twice in the fifth.
First, the Comets got on the board as
Lyndi Hemmelgarn led off the inning with her first career home run. The very next batter,
Autumn Bridges, then doubled and scored on
Kyleigh Kirby's RBI double, making it 10-2. Despite threatening for more, the Comet momentum would end there with MSJ taking the win.
Offensively,
Kyleigh Kirby finished with two hits – both doubles – one RBI and one walk.
Lyndi Hemmelgarn and
Autumn Bridges each also accounted for a hit in the game, with Hemmelgarn's marking her first collegiate homer.
In the pitcher's circle,
Addi Parker (0-3) took the loss allowing seven hits and six runs.
Megan Mlinaric pitched two innings conceding four runs on five hits and a walk. She struckout two.
