COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University softball team swept Bluffton University on Friday afternoon, winning game one 7-4 before emerging victorious 9-5 in a darkness-shortened contest in game two.
The Comets are now 4-4 overall, while Bluffton falls to 6-8.
GAME ONE
Capital got on the board early with a run in the first inning thanks to an RBI single from
Emma Sweetman that scored
Kyleigh Kirby from second.
Ahead 1-0, Capital let the BEavers back into the game and exchanged the lead into the fourth inning, before falling behind 4-3 by the end of the fourth frame. Capital got their runs in that span from
Reagan Irons and
Autumn Bridges both scoring on errors.
Despite trailing by a run heading to the sixth inning, Capital remained calm and plated four runs in the bottom half of the sixth to take a 7-4 lead that would hold for the win. First, Capital plated two runs on a two-RBI double by
Michelle Brumfield. pinch runner
Shelby Allen then scored on a squeeze bunt by
Alyssa Miller. Bridges then capped it off with an RBI single up the middle to score
Laureli McMahon.
In the pitcher's circle,
Alyssa Miller tossed a complete game surrendering four runs (one earned) on three hits and six walks. She did strikeout six hitters in the process.
At the dish, Capital collected 10 hits, led by three from
Autumn Bridges and two from
Emma Sweetman.
Kyleigh Kirby,
Michelle Brumfield,
Laureli McMahon,
Alyssa Miller and
Reagan Irons all accounted for one hit.
GAME TWO
The Comets kept up the hot offense in the bottom of the first inning, going in front 4-0 thanks to a combo of patience and effective baserunning. The first three batters for Cap reached on two walks and a hit-by-pitch to load things up with nobody out. There,
Michelle Brumfield tagged a sac fly to score
Autumn Bridges. On the same play,
Kyleigh Kirby worked out of a pickle and scored on a muffed catch by the Beavers' defense. The next two runs came via an RBI double by
Megan Mlinaric and an RBI single by
Reagan Irons.
Bluffton scored two of their own in the top of the second, but a five-run explosion in the bottom of the third gave the Comets the cushion they needed to hold on for the win.
In that fifth inning, Capital scored runs on an RBI fielder's choice by
McKenzie Kennedy, an RBI single from
Autumn Bridges, and RBI groundout by
Kyleigh Kirby and an RBI sac fly by
Emma Sweetman.
Megan Mlinaric won the game in the pitcher's circle, throwing 4.1 innings and allowing five runs (four earned) on six hits and a pair of walks. She struckout four in the process.
Addi Parker came on to record the last two outs of the game for Cap with one strikeout.
At the plate, Capital had six hits, led by two from
Reagan Irons and one each from Bridges, Kirby, Sweetman, Mlianric and
Laureli McMahon.
