COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University softball team battled tough with a quality Wittenberg University side on Wednesday afternoon, dropping both games by narrow margins. Game one was a 5-3 score, with game two going the Tigers' way 8-5.
Capital is now 4-6 overall, while Wittenberg is 10-2 on the year.
GAME ONE
Capital got ahead in the first inning thanks to an RBI sacrifice fly from
Emma Sweetman. The run was scored by
Autumn Bridges who opened the game with a double.
Later in the game, Capital got another pair of runs thanks to a two-RBI single by Sweetman who scored Bridges and
Kyleigh Kirby.
Unfortunately for Cap, the Comets could not force any more runs across, dropping the game 5-3.
Autumn Bridges was 3-for-3 with two runs scored, while
Emma Sweetman was 1-for-2 with three RBIs.
Megan Mlinaric had the lone other hit.
Alyssa Miller (2-2) threw 4.1 innings allowing just two runs on five hits and one walk.
Addi Parker tossed 2.2 innings in relief.
GAME TWO
The Comets scored three in the bottom of the first on an RBI single by
Megan Mlinaric, an RBI groundout from
Michelle Brumfield and an RBI single by
Megan Parry. Despite the lead, Wittenberg went in front with four runs in top of the third.
Capital responded with a single run in the bottom of the third to tie the game at 4-4 thanks to an RBI single by
Michelle Brumfield.
The Tigers plated a run in the fifth and three in the eighth to move ahead 8-4.
Capital didn't go quietly though, scoring another run in the bottom of the sixth as
Reagan Irons scored on a first and third play.
Megan Parry and
Megan Mlinaric led the team with two hits each, while
Kyleigh Kirby,
Autumn Bridges,
Emma Sweetman,
Michelle Brumfield and
Reagan Irons all had one hit. Brumfield had two RBIs with Mlinaric and Parry each having an RBI.
Megan Mlinaric started and ended the game, pitching five innings and striking out four.
Addi Parker (0-4) pitched the middle two innings, allowing the eventual game winning runs.

Capital will look to get back up to .500 with two games against Olivet on Friday, March 21st. First pitch at Clowson Field is slated for 3 p.m.
