COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University softball team got back up to .500 on the season with a two game sweep over Olivet in the Battle of the Comets. The Purple and White beat Olivet 4-3 in extra innings of game one and 11-0 in a five-inning win in game two.
Capital is now 6-6 overall while Olivet is 0-2.
GAME ONE
Capital went ahead 1-0 in the first inning of game one, thanks to a sacrifice fly by
Emma Sweetman that scored
Kyleigh Kirby. Ahead 1-0, the Comets eventually fell behind 2-1 and were forced to play catch-up.
In the bottom of the sixth, Cap scored twice to go back in front 3-2. First, pinch runner
Abby Campredon scored on an Olivet throwing error after
Laureli McMahon laid down a great sacrifice bunt. Then,
Keaura Shilling popped up a sacrifice fly on the infield grassline that scored
McKenzie Kennedy from third.
Despite getting to two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Olivet tied the game at 3-3 forcing extra innings.
In the extra frame,
Reagan Irons hit a sharp single to right field that scored tiebreaker runner
Alyssa Miller from second base to win the game in walk-off fashion.
Addi Parker (1-4) earned her first career win in the pitcher's circle, throwing a complete eight-inning game. She tossed the first three innings in no-hit fashion and only ended the game allowing four hits and three walks.
At the plate,
Autumn Bridges ended with two hits, while
Kyleigh Kirby,
Emma Sweetman,
Michelle Brumfield,
Reagan Irons,
Addi Parker and
Megan Parry all recorded one hit a piece.
GAME TWO
The Purple and White cruised to victory in the second game of the doubleheader, scoring 11 runs in the first three innings and riding a stellar pitching performance from
Alyssa Miller to shutout the Olivet Comets.
The scoring got started in the first inning again as
Emma Sweetman laid down a perfect sacrifice squeeze bunt that scored
Kyleigh Kirby from third.
In the second, Capital added four more runs thanks to a two-RBI triple by
McKenzie Kennedy, an RBI double by
Kyleigh Kirby, and a wild pitch that scored Kirby.
Not satisfied, Capital scored six more runs in the bottom of the third to go up 11-0. First,
Megan Parry smashed a towering two-run home run to left field that served to be her first collegiate homer. Then,
Shelby Allen ripped an RBI double to score
Lyndi Hemmelgarn. Allen then scored on an error later before
Michelle Brumfield hit a two-RBI single that scored Bridges and Kirby to cap off the scoring.
Alyssa Miller (3-2) twirled a gem in the pitcher's circle, holding Olivet to just one hit and two walks over five innings as she also struckout six opposing batters. The outing proved to be her first career complete game shutout.
At the plate, Capital tallied 12 hits, led by
Kyleigh Kirby with three.
Michelle Brumfield and
Megan Parry each had two hits, while Bridges, Hemmelgarn,
Aileen Mendoza, Allen, and Kennedy all had one hit each. The hit for Mendoza was a career-first for the freshman.

Capital will take the weekend off before starting a six-game road trip next week. First, Capital will head to Bethany on Tuesday, March 25th, then to Case Western Reserve on Thursday, March 27th and then to Otterbein on Saturday, March 29th.
