COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University men's lacrosse team erased a three-goal deficit in the fourth quarter to level the score at 10-10, only to see their opponents score a goal in the final minute to claim an 11-10 win.
The loss sets Capital back to 2-3 on the year, while Westminster improves to 4-1 overall.
The Comets got the first two goals of the game to lead 2-0 thanks to first quarter tallies from
Mason Spaulding and
Ty Chase.
Unfortunately, the lead didn't last as Westminster's Gavin Jones rattled off four goals by the 8:55 mark of the second quarter to push the visitors in front 4-2.
Despite being knocked back, Capital responded with a pair of quickfire goals off the stick of
Charlie Howenstine and Spaulding to level the score at 4-4.
Again, the Titans answered back, with a goal to go up 5-4 by halftime.
In the second half, a quick strike from
Jacob Poole tied the score at 5-5, but Westminster scored three straight to lead 8-5.
Howenstine and Poole each scored before the end of the third quarter, making the score 10-7.
In the fourth, Capital's offense got it going and got three straight goals by
Landon Weihl, Howenstine and Chase to tie the game at 10-10 with 3:11 remaining.
Unfortunately for the Comets, a costly turnover gave Westminster the ball back where they would score off the stick of Ethan Kurtz with just 41 seconds left to claim the eventual 11-10 victory.
THE NUMBERS
Charlie Howenstine was the leading scorer for Cap, ending with three goals and four assists for seven points. He added a ground ball as well.
Mason Spaulding was next for Capital, recording three points on two goals and an assist.
Ty Chase and
Jacob Poole each had two goals, while
Landon Weihl accounted for the other goal.
Gino Nave led all field players with seven ground balls, level with goalie
Tyler Carney, while faceoff man
Tyler Lieu garnered six.
Freddy Noday and
Eric Patterson were up there in GB pickups with three each.
Nave was also the leader in caused turnovers with two, while Noday,
Dylan Christopherson,
Noah Musick, and
Anthony Carusone each had one.
Tyler Lieu was 8-for-9 on the faceoff, while
Freddy Noday was 9-of-16 at the dot.
Tyler Carney made 16 saves in the losing effort, with his record on the season falling to 2-3 in goal.

The Comets will head out on the road next Saturday, March 15th as they head down to Danville, Kentucky to play Centre College. The faceoff is set for 2 p.m. but will immediately follow the Capital vs. Centre women's lacrosse game that is slated for a 12 p.m. start on the same field.
