VERO BEACH, Fla. – The Capital University baseball team (6-8) wrapped up their spring trip to Jackie Robinson Training Complex on Saturday with a doubleheader against Susquehanna (7-5). It would be a high-scoring day overall with the River Hawks taking game one 17-7 and the Comets taking game two 13-9.
GAME ONE | CAPITAL 7-17 SUSQUEHANNA
Capital bounced out to an early lead in game one, taking a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first with back-to-back sac flies from
Gio Mastrorosa and
Ryne McKinney that scored
Charlie Colson and
Kielan LaMarr. Unfortunately, this was followed by 10 runs from the River Hawks in the top half of the fourth, making it 10-2.
The Comets would cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the fifth, scoring four to make it 10-6. It started with a
Bryce Kyees single down the right field line that plated McKinney. Next,
Michael Andryszczyk reached on a fielder's choice that brought around
Hunter Wilson. This was followed by a sac fly from LaMarr that allowed Kyees to come home. Finally, Mastrorosa earned an RBI the hard way, getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring around Andryszczyk to score.
Unfortunately, CU's comeback hopes would be dashed in the next two innings as Susquehanna put up four in the sixth and three in the seventh to take a demanding 17-6 lead. Cap only got one back in the bottom of the seventh with a Kyees walk with the bases loaded to score LaMarr, bringing the game to an end at 17-7.
GAME ONE NUMBERS
Gio Mastrorosa and
Bryce Kyees both drove in two runs. Mastrorosa had a sac fly and a walk while
Bryce Kyees reached four times with a hit by pitch, a hit, and two walks, scoring one run in the process.
Kielan LaMarr reached four times, going 2-for-2 with two walks as well. He also stole a base, scored two runs, and recorded one RBI.
Ryne McKinney drove in one and scored one with a hit and a sac fly.
Michael Andryszczyk recorded an RBI and a run scored with a walk and a fielder's choice.
Charlie Colson went 2-for-4, adding a walk and a run scored.
Ty Clifton went 2-for-5.
Hunter Wilson reached four times, going 1-for-1 with three walks and also scoring a run.
Robby Harrison recorded the remaining hit for the Comets alongside two walks.
Logan Detty (2-2) got the start and went 3.1 innings with three strikeouts in the losing decision. He was relieved by
Brian Young (0.2 IP, 2 SO),
Noah McMullen (1.0 IP, 1 SO) who made his debut and recorded his first career strikeout,
Nolan Kelley (0.1 IP) who also made his debut,
Sam Everts (0.2 IP, 1 SO), and
Julian McCann (1.0 IP, 1 SO).
GAME TWO | CAPITAL 13-9 SUSQUEHANNA
Capital took a large early lead in game two, batting around in the third inning to go up 8-0. It all started with a
Kielan LaMarr steal of second that prompted a throwing error by the catcher that allowed
Charlie Colson to come home. Next,
Gio Mastrorosa roped a single up the middle that scored
Kielan LaMarr. That was followed by a
Ryne McKinney single to left field that plated
Ty Clifton. Next,
Ethan Rodriguez hit a sac fly to right, allowing Mastrorosa to cross. Then Colson reached via an error by the second baseman, bringing McKinney across. Next, LaMarr was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring home
Bryce Kyees. Finally, Clifton scored both Colson and Brophy.
Susquehanna would get two back – one in the fourth and one in the sixth – but those were canceled out by one run in each the fifth and the sixth for the Comets. In the fifth it was a LaMarr single to right that scored Brophy, followed by a Rodriguez single up the middle in the sixth to score Mastrorosa making it 10-2 after six.
The River Hawks put together a bit of a comeback in the seventh, scoring five runs, but that was soon squashed by three for CU in the top of the ninth. First Clifton reached on a dropped fly to center, scoring Colson. Next, McKinney was hit by a pitch that put LaMarr across. Finally, Rodriguez sent another single to right center to score Clifton. Susquehanna added two consolation runs in the bottom of the ninth to bring the final scoreline to 13-9.
GAME TWO NUMBERS
The Comets pushed across 13 runs on 14 hits and four Susquehanna errors, also receiving 11 free passes on five walks and six hit batsmen.
Ethan Rodriguez had the hot hand, going 3-for-5 in his debut, recording his first three career hits with three RBIs.
Ty Clifton also went 3-for-5, reaching a fourth time on a walk and recording two RBIs with two runs scored.
Kielan LaMarr reached four times, getting one hit, one walk, and two hit by pitches. He drove in two and scored two alongside one stolen base.
Ryne McKinney had one hit and one hit by pitch with two RBIs and one steal.
Gio Mastrorosa reached four times on two hits, one walk, and one hit by pitch. He recorded a ground-rule double, one RBI, and two runs scored.
Charlie Colson reached twice with a triple and a hit by pitch. He knocked in one and scored three, also grabbing a stolen base.
Bryce Kyees reached three times with a hit and two walks, also scoring a run.
Ryan Brophy reached twice with a hit and a hit by pitch, swiping one bag as well and coming around to score both times.
Cole Boroff went 1-for-1.
William Furry (1-0) got the start and his first career win, going 6.0 innings, giving up only two runs with one strikeout, and throwing a no-hitter through the first 4.2 innings.
Colin Boldin and
Jared Carpenter came in in relief. Carpenter pitched the final three innings, striking out two and recording his first career save.
