VERO BEACH, Fla. – The Capital University baseball team (5-7) was back in action on Friday at the Jackie Robinson Training Complex after having the day off on Thursday. This time they faced off against Norwich (4-5) in a doubleheader, dropping game one 11-6 but bouncing back for a 7-1 win in game two.
GAME ONE | CAPITAL 6-11 NORWICH
Capital struggled early on, giving up two runs in the first inning and one in the second to fall into a 3-0 deficit. The Comets had to wait until the top of the third for their first hit of the game, with their first run of the game crossing the plate shortly after via a
Ty Clifton sacrifice fly to right field that scored
Andy Gill and made it a 3-1 game. Unfortunately, the Cadets responded with four more runs in the bottom half of the innings, making it 7-1 through three.
Cap's bats finally came alive in the top of the fifth as they put five runs across, starting with a Clifton single down the right field line that scored
Charlie Colson and
Michael Andryszczyk. Next,
Robby Harrison scored
Kielan LaMarr with a single to left field, followed by a
Bryce Kyees single up the middle that scored Harrison and Clifton to put the Purple and White well within reach at 7-6. Unfortunately, that was also close as CU would get as Norwich went on to add four runs in the bottom half of the fifth and hold Capital scoreless for the remainder of the game, ending with a 11-6 final.
GAME ONE NUMBERS
Ty Clifton led the offensive output with three RBIs and one run scored during his 1-for-3 performance that included a sac fly.
Bryce Kyees also went 1-for-3, adding a walk and knocking in two runs.
Robby Harrison went 1-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored.
Charlie Colson recorded three hits and one run scored, going 3-for-4 in the game.
Kielan LaMarr reached three times in four plate appearances, going 1-for-2 with two walks and one run scored.
Andy Gill and
Michael Andryszczyk recorded the remaining two runs for the Comets.
Tyler Bebout (0-3) got the start for CU, going 2.2 innings and striking out six in the losing decision. He was relieved by
Ben Mohler (1.1 IP),
Drew Pfundt (0.2 IP), and
Brian Young (1.1 IP, 2 SO).
GAME TWO | CAPITAL 7-1 NORWICH
Cap bounced back strongly in game two which started as a pitchers' duel with
Trevor Woodyard battling for 4.1 innings and only giving up one run. It would remain scoreless until the third inning when both sides scored one. The Purple and White put up their run via a
Gio Mastrorosa single to left center in the bottom of the third that brought in
Kielan LaMarr to make it 1-1. That third inning would be it on the scoreboard for Norwich with CU shutting them out for the remaining four innings. The Purple and White would go on to add five in the fifth and one in the sixth to run away with the game, 7-1.
The scoring in the fifth inning started with a Mastrorosa ground-rule double that plated
Charlie Colson. Next,
Ryne McKinney sent a single into left center that scored Mastrorosa and LaMarr. That was followed by a
Bryce Kyees single into center that brought around McKinney. Finally,
Michael Andryszczyk doubled down the left field line to put
Ryan Brophy across and make it a 6-1 game. In the sixth, it was McKinney with a single through the left side to plate Colson for Capital's seventh and final run of the day.
GAME TWO NUMBERS
Ryne McKinney went 3-for-4, knocking in three runs and scoring one as well.
Gio Mastrorosa went a perfect 4-for-4 with a double, two RBIs, and one run scored.
Bryce Kyees reached three times, going 2-for-3 with a walk and an RBI.
Michael Andryszczyk recorded a double and an RBI.
Kielan LaMarr and
Ty Clifton both went 2-for-4. LaMarr also recorded a double and two runs scored.
Charlie Colson scored two runs while
Ryan Brophy scored one.
Trevor Woodyard and
Casey Wilkins (1-0) pitched a gem. Woodyard got the start and went 4.1 innings with three strikeouts while only giving up one run. Wilkins came in to finish the game, pitching 2.2 scoreless innings with two strikeouts as he earned his first win of the season.
