Baseball Wins One, Loses One Against Waynesburg

VERO BEACH, Fla. – The Capital University baseball team (4-5) earned another split on the second day of their spring trip to Jackie Robinson Training Complex, this time winning one and losing one against Waynesburg (3-4). The Comets would come out hot in game one, scoring 14 in the first five innings en route to a 14-10 win. Game two was much closer, ending 4-3 in extra innings with Waynesburg walking it off in the bottom of the eighth.

GAME ONE | CAPITAL 14-10 WAYNESBURG
Capital started strong in game one with four in the first, three each in the second, the third, and the fifth, and one in the fourth to bring their total to 14 through five. On the other side, Waynesburg would put up one in the third, six in the sixth, and three in the seventh as their comeback effort was shut down by the Comets at 10 runs, making it a 14-10 final in favor of the boys from Columbus.

Ty Clifton got the party started in the first inning with a single through the right side that brought Charlie Colson around to score. Robby Harrison then sent one over the left field wall to score himself, Kielan LaMarr, and Clifton, making it a 4-0 ballgame.

In the second, CU scored three off of a bases-clearing three-run triple from Ryne McKinney. He brought in Harrison, Clifton, and LaMarr to make it 7-0.

The Purple and White would outscore the Yellow Jackets 3-1 in the third inning thanks to a LaMarr double into left center plated Andryszczyk and Kyees followed by a Clifton single into right center that scored Colson, making it a 10-1 game.

Cap's lone run in the fourth came via a productive Bryce Kyees groundout, giving McKinney the opportunity to score and make it a 10-run 11-1 lead.

Capital's final three runs came in the fifth inning with McKinney sending another shot into the outfield to clear the bases on a double, plating Harrison, Clifton, and LaMarr once again to give Cap a demanding 14-1 lead. Waynesburg would cut into the lead in the sixth and seventh but not enough to overcome the Comets' offensive output, ending the game at 14-10.

GAME ONE NUMBERS
Ryne McKinney led the offensive outpouring, reaching three times on a 2-for-3 game with a triple, a double, and a walk, driving in six runs and scoring twice in the process.

Robby Harrison scored three times, drove in three runs with a homer, and walked once.

Kielan LaMarr and Ty Clifton both went perfect at the plate and drove in two runs while scoring three. LaMarr was 1-for-1 with a double, two walks, and a stolen base. Clifton went 2-for-2 and walked twice as well.

Bryce Kyees had a 2-for-4 game with one RBI and one run-scored.

Charlie Colson, Cole Boroff, and Michael Andryszczyk recorded the three remaining hits for the Comets. Additionally, Colson scored twice and Andryszczyk scored once.

Logan Detty (2-1) got the start and the win for CU, going 5.2 innings and getting two strikeouts. He was relieved by Julian McCann, and Drew Pfundt (1.1 IP, 1 SO).

GAME TWO | CAPITAL 3-4 WAYNESBURG
The scoring slowed down for both sides in game two with five scoreless innings. Capital got all of their runs in the third inning, taking a 3-0 lead early on. Charlie Colson started it off with a triple to left center that scored Michael Andryszczyk, also coming around to score himself on an errant throw in from the shortstop. Next, Ryne McKinney sent a sacrifice fly into center that allowed Clifton to tag up and put up the third run.

From there, things were quiet until the bottom of the sixth when Waynesburg tied the game at 3-3. At this point, it became a game of who would break first, which would have been the Comets in the bottom of the seventh had it not been for the work ofBen Mohler. With bases loaded and only one out, Mohler managed to get out of the jam unscathed and force extras. Unfortunately, after a scoreless top half for CU, Waynesburg would eventually walk it off with a single, 4-3.

GAME TWO NUMBERS
Charlie Colson and Ryne McKinney recorded the only two RBIs for the Comets. Colson tripled and came around to score on an error, also recording a stolen base in the game. McKinney drove in one on a sac fly.

Kielan LaMarr and Michael Andryszczyk scored the remaining two runs for CU. Andryszczyk and Ty Clifton made up for the remaining two hits with Andryszczyk stealing a base as well.

William Furry got the nod and pitched 5.1 great innings, striking out six and allowing only three hits and two walks. Casey Wilkins, Sam Everts (0.2 IP), and Ben Mohler (1.2 IP, 1 SO) came on in relief. Mohler was pinned with the loss, his record now 0-1.
