COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University baseball team played the first of three scheduled doubleheaders at Huntington Park, the home of the Columbus Clippers, on Tuesday afternoon. Today's twinbill was against Ohio Wesleyan, where the Bishops would capture both wins via 9-2 and 7-6 scores.
Capital is now 10-12 overall, while OWU is 7-10.
GAME ONE
Capital fell behind 3-0 after the top of the first inning, but the bats responded well in the bottom of half to get right back into the game 3-2. First,
Charlie Colson led off the game with a deep triple to center and then scored on
Ty Clifton's RBI groundout. A few batters later,
Gio Mastrorosa would launch his first career home run to left field.
Unfortunately for the Comets, OWU's pitcher would settle in and pitch a gem of the next six innings, holding the Capital offense at bay.
William Furry (2-1) started on the mound and tossed six innings allowing eight hits, nine runs (five earned) with two strikeouts.
Logan Detty picked up one inning of relief, striking out one.
Six Comets recorded one hit each – Colson, Clifton, Mastrorosa,
Hunter Wilson,
Jonathan Mitchner, and
Michael Andryszczyk.
GAME TWO
The Comets jumped in front in game two in the bottom of the first inning thanks to a two-run home run from
Robby Harrison. The homer also scored
Ty Clifton.
From there, the next three innings went in OWU's favor as they scored one in the third and three runs in the fourth to move in front 4-2.
Capital got back into it with an RBI single from
Bryce Kyees in the fifth, but a three-run top half of the seventh gave OWU some much needed cushion.
In the bottom half of the seventh, Capital loaded the bases and then scored two on a two-RBI single by Kyees and an RBI sac fly by
Ethan Rodriguez. Unfortunately, the momentum would fizzle out as OWU would hang on for the 7-6 win.
Nash Andrix (1-1) started on the mound, tossing three innings while conceding five hits, four runs (two earned) and two walks with one strikeout.
Casey Wilkins (3.1 IP, 3 Ks, 3 ER), and
Jared Carpenter (0.2 IP, 1 K) picked up the relief.
The Comets recorded 11 hits, with three each from
Robby Harrison and
Bryce Kyees. Colson, Clifton, Wilson,
Ryne McKinney, and Andrysczyk each had a base knock.
