Baseball Opens Conference Play With a Split

TIFFIN, Ohio – The Capital University baseball team opened up OAC play on Saturday with a road doubleheader split at Heidelberg University. The Comets opened up with a 9-8 win before falling 3-0 in the second game.

Capital is now 10-10 overall with a 1-1 mark in the conference, while Heidelberg is 8-10 overall and also 1-1 in the OAC.

GAME ONE
Capital took advantage of some defensive miscues in the top of the first inning to jump ahead 4-0 before their defense even took the field. First, Robby Harrison jump started the party with an RBI single to score Kielan LaMarr. Then, Bryce Kyees would reach on an error that would score both Harrison and Ty Clifton. The inning was capped for the Comets thanks to Michael Andryszczyk's RBI fielder's choice that scored Ryne McKinney
Heidelberg would get one back in the bottom half of the first inning, and then tack on a second in the bottom of the second inning.

Capital kept the pressure on the hosts as Kielan LaMarr would hit a sac fly in the top of the fourth to score Andryszczyk from third. Even pushing the pressure further, Harrison would double home Charlie Colson to make it a 6-2 game.

Heidelberg responded with poise, tying the game at 6-6 in the bottom of the fourth.

The Comets then broke the tie in the top of the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Hunter Wilson. Then, two innings later in the top of the eighth, Capital added two, much needed insurance runs on a two RBI single from Kyees, making it 9-6.

In the bottom of the ninth, Heidelberg scored twice, but it would not be enough as Capital would escape with the 9-8 win.

Tyler Bebout started on the mound for Capital lasting 4.0 innings and ending with five hits, six runs (one earned), three walks and one strikeout. Ben Mohler (1-1) would pick up four strong innings of relief to earn the win. He ended with three hits and two unearned runs allowed while striking out five. Nash Andrix ended the final inning to earn his first career save, conceding just one walk in the game.

At the dish, the Comets collected 10 hits, led by a 4-for-5 effort by Robby Harrison. He would add two RBIs and two runs scored as well. Ty Clifton and Bryce Kyees each had two hits, while Charlie Colson and Ryne McKinney would each tag one base hit.

GAME TWO
The second game turned out to be a true pitcher's duel as both starting pitchers began the game in outstanding fashion. Capital's Trevor Woodyard allowed just two hits in the first three innings before surrendering one run in the fourth frame, while Heidelberg's Dylan Matousek threw a no-hitter through five frames.

Woodyard (2-1) ended up lasting 5.1 innings to concede seven hits and three runs while striking out four. Casey Wilkins worked 1.2 innings in relief with three strikeouts, while Jared Carpenter tossed one inning of relief as well with one strikeout.

At the plate, Capital mustered six hits with Michael Andryszczyk having two base knocks. Kielan LaMarr, Ty Clifton, Robby Harrison and Bryce Kyees each had one hit as well.
