Baseball Bounces Back With Game Two Win at Oberlin

OBERLIN, Ohio – The Capital University baseball team bounced back from a 14-7 game one loss to defeat the host Oberlin College Yeomen 9-4 in the second game of a Sunday doubleheader.

The Comets keep an even record, moving to 9-9 overall, while Oberlin is now 3-9 on the year.

GAME ONE
The Comets responded from a challenging first inning in which they found themselves behind 9-0 by out-scoring the Yeomen 7-5 over the final six innings, but ultimately could not recover, losing 14-7.

The Capital runs came thanks to some firepower at the plate with both Robby Harrison and Byrce Kyees blasting two-run home runs in the fourth inning. Kyees again knocked in two runs on a double in the sixth inning to cap off the Comet scoring. The first run of the game was courtesy of an RBI single by Charlie Colson in the third inning.

Logan Detty (2-3) was strapped with the loss, going just two-thirds of an inning, but Noah Bromberg (1.1 IP), Nathan Budill (1.0 IP), Noah McMullen (2.0 IP) and Colin Bolding (1.0 IP) picked up the relief. McMullen ended with three strikeouts, joined by Detty and Boldin with one punchout each.

Bryce Kyees was the lone Comet with two hits, while Charlie Colson, Kielan LaMarr, Ty Clifton, Robby Harrison, Hunter Wilson, Grayson Gulley, and Michael Andryszczyk all had one base hit.

GAME TWO
This time it would be the Comets to jump all over the opposing pitcher in the first inning as they plated five runs in the top of the first, thanks to patience at the plate.

The first three runs came courtesy of two RBI walks and an RBI hit-by-pitch from Robby Harrison, Gio Mastrorosa, and Hunter Wilson. Then, a run scored on a double play ground out, before Michael Andryszczyk singled home Mastrorosa to cap the scoring.

In the second, Capital tacked on another run thanks to an RBI double by Ty Clifton

Later in the third inning, Capital scored twice more thanks to base running plays. First, Bryce Kyees and Hunter Wilson pulled off a double steal, with Wilson scoring on the play. Then, Kyees who advanced to third on an error, scored on a balk, making the score 8-2.

The Comets would then benefit from another balk in the seventh inning as Kyees would score again from third thanks to the pitcher's mishap. That would be the final run in the game, ending 9-4 in Capital's favor.

William Furry (2-0) would start and throw 5.1 innings in the game, picking up his second career win. He surrendered seven hits and three walks to yield four runs, but he struckout seven in the effort. Ben Mohler finished one third inning away from a save, tossing 2.2 innings and allowing just two hits and two walks.

At the plate, it was again Bryce Kyees who was the lone multi-hit Comet. Charlie Colson, Kielan LaMarr, Ty Clifton, Grayson Gulley and Michael Andryszczyk all had one base hit.

UP NEXT
Capital's attention will now shift to OAC play as the team will travel to Tiffin, Ohio on Saturday, March 22nd for their first two conference games of the season at Heidelberg.
