SEWANEE, Tenn. – Dealing with a steady wind blowing toward the outfield fence, extra base hits proved more common than normal as the Capital University baseball team fell by a final score of 24-14 to wrap up their three-game road trip to Sewanee University of the South on Saturday.
The result now sets Capital at 0-3, while Sewanee is 3-0 on the young season.
With the two teams combined, the game saw 35 hits, 11 home runs, one triple and eight doubles, helping the runs pile up on both sides of the score. Additionally, there were a combined 15 walks.
The Comets jumped out in front early with a solo home run from
Kielan LaMarr to put the Comets in front 1-0 with just the second at-bat of the game.
The Tigers then answered back with four runs of their own in the bottom of the second, thanks to a home run and an RBI double.
Trailing 4-1, Capital responded with a bang in the top of the third, scoring seven times to go back in front, 8-4. First, LaMarr drove home his second RBI of the game as his single scored
Michael Andryszczyk. LaMarr and
Charlie Colson then came around to score on
Hunter Wilson's two-RBI double. With the momentum, Capital added two more as
Ryne McKinney hit a line drive, two-run home run over the right field fence to make it 6-4, Cap. After
Robby Harrison drew a walk, freshman
Bryce Kyees hit a two-run home run of his own to nearly the same spot over the fence as McKinney's. The homer made the score 8-4, Cap.
Unfortunately for Capital, their offense would taper off for a couple of innings, while Sewanee got their offense going, eventually flipping the score to read 22-8 in favor of the hosts by the end of the fifth inning.
Capital would not go down easily as the team would respond in force with five runs in the sixth inning., closing the gap to 22-13. LaMarr once again got things going with an RBI single that scored Andryszczyk. Then, Colson scored on a passed ball, before LaMarr would score on a wild pitch. Wilson was the next batter and would draw a walk. With a runner on, McKinney would tag his second two-run home run of the day over the right field fence to bring the score at 22-13. With two outs, Capital would continue to threaten as they loaded the bases, but unfortunately could not squeeze home any more runs in the inning.
One inning later, Capital got another run back as McKinney singled home
Kielan LaMarr to make it 22-14.
Despite the comeback efforts from the Comets, Sewanee would hit another home run in the bottom half of the seventh to seal a 24-14 scoreline, thus concluding the game.
