LOGAN, Ohio – The Capital University baseball team went to Logan High School on Sunday to play a doubleheader vs. Chatham, where the Comets would pick up their first two wins of the season thanks to 10-7 and 6-4 results.
Capital, now 2-3 overall, are set up well for their nine-game schedule in Florida next week. The games opened the season for Chatham who now sits 0-2 overall.
GAME ONE
The Comets put together a strong game from start to finish, enroute to their first win of the season, scoring 10 runs on 14 hits, two errors and eight walks.
Cap went in front 2-0 in the bottom of the first thanks to an RBI double by
Ty Clifton and an unearned run as Clifton scored on an error later in the frame.
Chatham responded with three runs in the top of the third, but Capital didn't waver re-claiming the lead in the bottom of the third thanks to a two-RBI single from
Charlie Colson that scored
Robby Harrison and
Ryne McKinney.
Later in the sixth inning, the Comets scored three more runs, thanks to an RBI double by
Michael Andryszczyk and a two-run home run by Colson. The homer was Colson's first career four-bagger.
As Chatham attempted to get back in the game, the Comets rode a strong three-inning pitching performance from
Casey Wilkins while also adding some insurance runs. Harrison would get plunked by a pitch with the bases loaded, and then
Bryce Kyees would single home two runs as well. That brought the score to 10-5, Cap heading to the ninth inning. In that final frame, Chatham got two more runs, but settled with a final score reading 10-7 in favor of Cap.
Ty Clifton and
Michael Andryszczyk led the team with three hits, while
Charlie Colson,
Hunter Wilson,
Ryne McKinney, and
Bryce Kyees each had two base knocks. Colson had four RBIs, while Kyees had two and Clifton and Andryszczyk each had one.
Tyler Bebout started on the mound, throwing four innings where he gave up five hits and four runs while striking out two.
Logan Detty (1-1) pitched two innings of relief where he allowed just one hit and two walks but no hits.
Casey Wilkins recorded the three-inning save while striking out six.
GAME TWO
The Comets were held a bit more in check offensively in game two, but the squad still found a way to get the job done, breaking out in the fifth inning.
Capital found a run in the first inning after
Kielan LaMarr walked and then came around to score on a
Ty Clifton RBI groundout.
With Capital continuing to be no-hit for the first four frames, they finally got their first base knock in the top of the fifth thanks to LaMarr's two-out single. That hit only kickstarted the day for Cap as Clifton took one deep to right field for his first home run of the season. The homer put Cap in front 3-2.
The Comets would add a fourth run in the seventh on an RBI sac fly by Clifton – his fourth RBI of the game.
Later in the eighth inning,
Charlie Colson would hit a two-RBI single to score
Bryce Kyees and
Tristan Burns. The runs would prove crucial and ultimately the deciding runs.
Trevor Woodyard (1-0) started on the bump and earned the win after throwing six innings and surrendering three hits and two runs.
Diego Astacio and
Ben Mohler combined for an inning of relief before
Sam Everts shut the door in one inning, earning his first career save.
