SEWANEE, Tenn. – The Capital University baseball team began the 2025 season with a pair of road games at the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee this weekend. Unfortunately for the Comets, the team would start off the year with a pair of losses, falling 11-1 in the opening game and then 4-2 in the second game.
With this being opening day for both sides, Capital is now 0-2 and Sewanee is 2-0.
GAME ONE
The Comets got going in the top of the first inning thanks to a triple from
Charlie Colson in his first career at-bat. Being on third, Colson scored two batters later as
Ty Clifton bounced a single up the middle to give the Comets their first run of the season.
Later, in the bottom of the third inning, the University of the South plated four runs of their own to take a 4-1 lead over the Comets.
From that point on, Capital would threaten with runners, thanks to additional hits from Colson,
Kielan LaMarr,
Ty Clifton and
Hunter Wilson, as well as 10 walks, but CU would fail to add any more runs in the game. On the other hand, Sewanee tacked on seven more, leading to a final score of 11-1.
Colson highlighted his debut game, reaching safely in all five plate appearances with two hits, three walks, and two stolen bases.
Bryce Kyees also had a strong debut, drawing three walks.
Logan Detty (0-1) earned his first career start on the mound, throwing 2.2 innings while surrendering four runs while striking out four.
Ben Mohler (3 IP, 2 Ks),
Diego Astacio (1.1 IP, 1 K) and
Casey Wilkins (1.0 IP, 1K) made up the relief effort.
GAME TWO
After falling behind 3-0, the Comets threatened to get right back in the game in the top of the fourth inning. First,
Robby Harrison broke through with the Comets' first hit of the game, and
Hunter Wilson followed with a bunt single to put two on.
Bryce Kyees then drew a walk to load the bases with two outs. Unfortunately for the Comets, no runs could come home as the Sewanee pitcher worked out of the jam.
The Comet pressure did pay off in the top of the sixth as they got themselves squarely back into the game at 3-2. The runs were thanks to a two-run home run from
Hunter Wilson, the first round-tripper of the season for Capital.
Robby Harrison, who had previously been hit by a pitch, scored on the homer.
Again the Comets threatened to keep clawing back into the game, this time in the top of the eighth inning, trailing 4-2. After two outs, Wilson got things started with a double that was then followed by a pair of walks from
Ryne McKinney and
Bryce Kyees to load the bases. Unfortunately, the inning would end before any runs could cross the plate, leaving the score 4-2 in favor of the Tigers.
Wilson had the hot bat, going 3-for-4 from the plate with the two-run home run providing the only Cap scoring of the game.
Charlie Colson,
Robby Harrison, and Kyees all contributed one hit each, with Kyees drawing two more walks.
Tyler Bebout (0–1) started on the bump and surrendered three runs on six hits and two walks in four innings of work.
Trevor Woodyard pitched the final four frames allowing just one hit and four walks. The duo combined to strikeout out nine – six from Woodyard and three from Bebout.
