ADA, Ohio – The Capital University men's basketball team utilized a strong second half in which they out-scored the Ohio Northern Polar Bears 38-28 to catapult themselves back into the win column with a 69-64 result.
The win makes Capital 7-12 overall and 4-8 in the conference, while ONU slips to 10-9 (4-8 OAC). The victory for the Purple and White also secured the season sweep of ONU as the Comets also won the home fixture by a score of 100-90 back in December.
The tale of the game was an efficient shooting performance by Capital who converted just under 47% of their shot attempts, a third of their three-pointers and 21 of their free throw attempts. On defense, Cap held the Polar Bears to 38% shooting and 25% from beyond the arc while only allowing 15 made free throws.
Out of the halftime intermission, ONU started on the front foot, going in front by seven points at 38-31. From there back-to-back buckets from
Daryl Cooper kickstarted a a Comet run that eventually put CU in front 48-47. The run was capped off by a layup from McKane FInkenbine with 14:23 left in the half.
From that point on, both teams exchanged leads as the game stayed within one or two points until the final 26 seconds as
Se'Ron Calloway-White iced the game from the free throw line, converting four charity shots in those waning seconds.
THE NUMBERS
McKane Finkenbine led the team in scoring with 17 points to go with five rebounds, four assists, three steals and one block.
Justin Nixon scored 14 points on a sharp 5-of-8 from the floor. He added five boards, two blocks, one assist and one steal.
Se'Ron Calloway-White secured his first career double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. His night was highlighted by a perfect line as he went 3-for-3 shooting, including 2-of-2 from range and a perfect 4-of-4 from the free throw line.
