COLUMBUS, Ohio - Capital University men's basketball used a strong second-half performance to pull away from Alma College, earning a 91–79 victory on Monday afternoon at the Capital Center Performance Arena. The win moves the Comets to 6-6 overall and 1-3 in Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) play, while Alma drops to 2-9 on the season.
Capital led 39-35 at halftime after a competitive opening 20 minutes that featured 10 lead changes. The Comets shot 41.2 percent from the floor in the first half and went into the break with momentum after closing the period on a late scoring surge.
The Comets turned up the intensity after halftime, shooting 62.1 percent from the field and 55.6 percent from three-point range in the second half. Capital outscored Alma 52-44 over the final 20 minutes, using efficient offense and strong interior play to build a double-digit lead it would not relinquish.
Se'Ron Calloway-White paced Capital with 20 points and eight rebounds, while Chris Mitchell added 19 points and a game-high 12 rebounds for a double-double effort. Julian Mitchell chipped in 12 points and four assists, and Kamran Ensley and McKane Finkenbine each scored 11 points. Finkenbine also dished out a season-high eight assists as Capital totaled 20 assists on 32 made field goals. All nine players that appeared in the contest for the Comets would score.
Capital held the advantage in points in the paint (44-30) and second-chance points (16-10), while also shooting 85.7 percent from the free-throw line. The Comets also capitalized on fast-break opportunities, scoring 13 points in transition.
