BEREA, Ohio – The Capital University women's soccer team scored twice in the second half of a 2-1 road win at Baldwin Wallace University on Saturday afternoon. There, the Comets got goals from
Taylor Marcum and
Ava Spirk to open up the conference season with a quality win.
Capital is now 6-3-1 overall and 1-0 in conference, while BW is 6-3-1 on the year and 0-1 in the OAC.
THe first half passed with not much to mention as a 0-0 score carried into halftime. Capital's
Liv Alford did make three saves to keep the Comets in the game.
Straightaway after halftime, Capital found an opportunity in the 48th minute as
Taylor Marcum was fouled inside the top corner of the box, drawing a penalty kick. Marcum herself stepped up to take the PK and buried the shot to the right side of the goal, making it 1-0, Capital.
Just about 13 minutes later, Capital doubled their lead as
Ava Spirk would score her second of the season. Spirk drifted into the penalty area unmarked as
Bella Leonetti's cross made its way into the box. The unmarked Spirk one-timed the cross past the BW goalie to make it 2-0.
The Yellow Jackets – who had their fair share of opportunities – did get a goal back in the 65th minute from Sydni Mudge, but they couldn't muster much else as Capital would escape Berea with a 2-1 win.
In the end,
Sofia Walton led Cap with three shots, joined by
Juli Sprague,
Ryanne Michel and Spirk with two each.
Alford finished the match with three saves – all of which came in the first half.
