ASHLAND, Ohio –
Cheik Souare set a new school record in the 200-meter dash on Saturday afternoon at Ashland University's Invitational. The new mark in the sprint race highlighted a solid day's performance for the Capital University track and field teams.
In addition to Souare's record, Capital set five more top-10 marks in other events on the day.
MEN
200-Meter Dash:
Cheik Souare ran a blistering time of 22.05 seconds in the 200-meter dash, a time far surpassing the Comet school record in the event – a mark of 22.31 seconds that was previously held by Dan McCormack in 2023.
5,000 Meter Run:
Gunnar Yates placed 14th with a time of 16:28.73. The time from Yates was good enough to place him ninth all-time in the Capital record books.
60-Meter Dash: Souare qualified for the finals after he placed seventh in the prelims. His qualifying time registered at 6.99 seconds. In the finals, Souare placed sixth in 6.96 seconds – a time that improves his own hold on third all-time at Capital.
800-Meter Run:
Chip Smith made his Comet debut on the track, clocking in a time of 2:00.08 in the 800-meter run. The time placed him 26th in the event and is good to set him seventh in the Capital record books.
3,000 Meter Run:
Aiden Mahony ran a time of 9:38.20 and was followed closely by
Aaron McNutt with a time of 9:48.74.
Long Jump:
Justin Mathews lept a distance of 6.44 meters to place sixth in the event.
Triple Jump: Mathews placed as the runner-up in the triple jump, leaping a distance of 13.86 meters which is good enough to move him up to fourth best in Capital history.
Weight Throw:
Nolan Piper tossed a distance of 14.73 meters in the weight throw, finishing 13th overall.
Shot Put:
Bo Baker led the way for Cap, tossing 13.96 meters, supported by
Waylon Yeager with a toss of 11.14 meters.
WOMEN
60-Meter Dash:
Jaleea Harvey clocked in a time of 8.47 seconds, placing 34th.
One Mile Run:
Olivia Ellis placed 23rd in a time of 5:53.51.
200-Meter Dash: Harvey was at it again in the 200-meter dash, clocking in at 28.42 seconds to place 38th overall.
3,000 Meter Run:
Elizabeth Mak and
Catherine Schaub ran the 3K in close proximity to each other with Mak placing 33rd in 11:55.67 and Schaub placing 36th in 12:16.02.
Pole Vault:
Alex Wilkinson cleared the bar at 2.95 meters, which is good to move her up to seventh best in Capital history.
Avery Hart vaulted a height of 2.80 meters as well.
Weight Throw:
Mia Sanchez tossed a distance of 12.78 meters, followed by
DeiVon McCullough (11.88 meters) and
Secora Jones (10.90m).
Shot Put: McCullough led the way for Cap with a heave of 10.02 meters, followed by Sanchez (9.32m) and Jones (7.50m).
