WESTERVILLE, Ohio – A last second running jumper from
Alex Eyink fell offline for the Capital University men's basketball team in a hotly contested 73-72 loss at crosstown rivals. Both teams saw leads by as many as nine points on the night, but ultimately a late put-back jumper by the Cardinals was enough to give the hosts the narrow win.
The loss now sets Capital back to 5-10 overall and 2-6 in the OAC, while Otterbein improves to 9-6 overall and 4-4 in the conference.
The COmets jumped out early behind the sharp play of freshman
Se'Ron Calloway-White who was making his debut in the rivalry match-up. Calloway-White, who finished with 16 points, scored seven of the team's first 10 points to get things going early.
From there, the teams played a stout back-and-forth affair. With the Cardinals carrying a 36-31 lead at halftime, the Comets were forced to fight back. The deficit was spread out to 56-47 at one point, but the next nine points went in Cap's favor with the run being punctuated by a thunderous, highlight-reel dunk from
Dom Moegerle, tying the game at 56-all.
The Comets looked to put themselves in control ahead 70-65 with 3:46 left, but the next eight points went the way of the hosts, before two free throws by
McKane Finkenbine proved to be consolation as Capital's chance to win it at the end fell off-line.
