GAMBIER, Ohio – The Capital University baseball team went out on the road for what was a late-season non-conference match-up at Kenyon College on Wednesday afternoon. The single game was a make-up for a previously rained out doubleheader earlier this season. In today's game though, the Comets played loose and utilized two big innings of offense to beat the Owls 9-7.
Capital is now 10-26 overall, while Kenyon is 21-13. Capital has now beaten two teams with 20 or more wins in two out of their last three games, with the other coming on the road at No. 4 ranked BW last Friday.
After Capital fell behind to Kenyon, 4-0, the Comets responded with a six-run top of the second inning to go in front.
In that frame, things got started with two outs and continued through the batting order as Cap plated six.
Cade Anderson started it with a two-RBI base hit that also scored a third thanks to a fielding error. He was followed by an RBI double from
Robby Harrison. The punctuation came thanks to a two-run double from
Arnulfo Gonzalez.
From there, the offense was kept quiet by the Owl bullpen, but Cap kept the game within reason thanks to their bullpen as well. Eventually, Cap found themselves heading to the eighth inning trailing 7-6.
In that eighth inning, Capital went back in front on a two-run double from
Kielan LaMarr. Then, a final insurance run crossed the plate as LaMarr scored himself on a wild pitch.
Ahead on the scoreboard, Capital turned to
Tyler Sickles who earned the six-out save thanks to three strikeouts. Sickles's three punchouts only made up a fraction of the Comets' 14 strikeouts as a staff. Comet starter
Drew Pfundt struckout three, as did relievers
Tyler Bebout and
Trevor Woodyard.
Noah Bromberg, who got the win, struckout two in his time on the mound.
Offensively,
Robby Harrison led the way with two hits. He was joined in the basehit column by LaMarr, Anderson,
Connor Feeney, Gonzalez,
Jared Carpenter,
Ryne McKinney, and
Cole Boroff. Cap also drew five walks on the day.
