NEW CONCORD, Ohio – The Capital University baseball team earned a split with Muskingum University on the road on Tuesday afternoon via scores of 13-1 and 2-3. In game one, Capital's bats came alive to support a near flawless pitching display from
Noah Bromberg and in game two, Cap again got a strong start – this time from
Tyler Sickles – but fell in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Capital is now 7-17 overall and 1-7 in the OAC, while Muskingum is 15-10 overall and 6-2 in the conference.
In game one, the Comets benefitted from a strong nine inning pitching effort from
Noah Bromberg as well as an offensive outburst of 15 hits and 13 runs to get their first OAC win of the season.
In the top of the third inning,
Robby Harrison helped his pitcher out, sending a home run over the fence in right center. He was then followed by an RBI single from
Connor Feeney later in the inning, putting Cap ahead 2-0.
From there, the Comets added two in the fourth, seventh and eighth innings to go with one in the sixth and four in the ninth to get the job done.
In the fourth, Harrison again delivered, hitting an RBI triple before scoring himself on a sac fly from
Kielan LaMarr.
In the sixth, Harrison was again the source as his RBI single to right scored
Ryne McKinney.
In the seventh, runs were scored on an error by Muskie's shortstop and an RBI single from
Cole Boroff.
Later in the eighth,
Ben Stevens drew a bases loaded walk to score LaMarr before
Daylan Barnes scored on a wild pitch.
To cap off the offense, Capital erupted for four more runs in the ninth thanks to an RBI groundout from Barnes and a three-run home run from
Cade Anderson – his first collegiate homer.
On the mound, Bromberg was steady as ever, carrying a three-hit shutout into the ninth inning before the first run would score from Muskingum on a pair of hits. After sealing the game, Bromberg closed the book on a fantastic outing with 9 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 4 BB, and 5 K.
Offensively, Harrison and Anderson each had three hits, while Feeney, McKinney and LaMarr finished with two each. Stevens, Boroff and
Michael Andryszczyk each had one base knock.
In the second game, Capital found themselves leading 2-0 into the bottom of the ninth inning thanks to single runs in the third and fifth innings. Those runs came courtesy of an RBI double from
Robby Harrison and a sac fly from
Cade Anderson.
In the bottom half of the ninth inning, Muskingum plated three runs on a solo home run and a bases loaded squeeze bunt that yielded two runs after a defensive error.
Despite the loss, Capital got another strong pitching display, this time from
Tyler Sickles. Sickles ended his outing with 8 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 2 BB and 6 K. In relief,
Logan Detty was strapped with the loss, allowing two runs (one earned).
Offensively, Cap was held to just six hits in the nightcap, with three hits coming from
Kielan LaMarr and one each coming from
Ryne McKinney,
Michael Andryszczyk and Harrison.
