Softball Splits With BW on Senior Day

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University softball team suffered a 6-3 setback in game one, but rallied for a 6-2 win in the nightcap to earn a Senior Day split with Baldwin Wallace University on Saturday afternoon. Prior to game one, the program recognized their lone senior Krislyn Bayles for her time with the team.

The results pushed Capital to 13-13 overall and 6-10 in the OAC. BW is now 19-13 overall and 9-5 in the conference.

In game one, the Comets fell into a 5-0 hole midway through the second inning, but scored three runs in the bottom of the second to make things interesting. In the bottom of the second inning, Capital garnered runs thanks to an RBI single from Emma Sweetman and Maci Stults and an RBI fielder's choice from Autumn Bridges

Despite a few good opportunities, Capital stranded seven runners on base and could not push across any further runs before settling for the 6-3 loss.

The Comets did get seven hits thanks to two each from Sweetman and Stults and one a piece from Bridges, Kyleigh Kirby, and McKenzie Kennedy

Krislyn Bayles pitched all of game one and conceded 14 hits, six runs and two walks in her effort.
In the second game, Capital again fell behind, this time just 1-0 in the top of the fourth. However, in the bottom of the fourth, Megan Mlinaric leveled the score with a line-drive home run to straight away center field – her fourth career homer.

With the score level, Capital erupted for five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to go ahead 6-1. Runs were scored thanks to RBIs from Autumn Bridges, Kyleigh Kirby, Mlinaric, Emma Sweetman and Hannah St. Clair

BW managed to score a consolation run in the top of the sixth on a sac fly, but could not get any closer, settling for the 6-2 final score in favor of Capital.

Capital recorded 10 hits in game two – three each from Kyleigh Kirby and Maci Stults, two from Hannah St. Clair, and one each from Bridges and Mlinaric.

Mlinaric pitched all seven innings of game two and allowed just five hits, two runs and three walks while striking out four Yellow Jackets.

Capital is currently scheduled to host Adrian College at Berliner Sports Park (Field 25) on Tuesday, April 30th. Rain appears to be in the forecast, so the program will monitor the weather closely in the build-up to that one. The regular season will then wrap up on Sunday, May 5th as the team travels to Marietta.
