Sweetman’s Walk-Off Hit Delivers Softball a Split With Adrian

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University softball team hosted a quality Adrian College team at Lou Berliner Sports Park on Tuesday afternoon/evening. In that doubleheader, sophomore Emma Sweetman delivered a two-run walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning in game one to give the Comets an earned split with Adrian.

Capital is now 14-14 overall, while Adrian is 25-9 on the year.

The Comets found themselves trailing 2-0 heading into the bottom of the seventh in what had proven to be a pure pitcher's duel between Megan Mlinaric and Macee Schang of Adrian.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Capital plated three runs all with nobody out thanks to a late rally. First, Mlinaric drew a walk. She was then relieved on the basepaths by Larae Portis who then advanced to second on Emma Gant's infield single. Portis then scored on Maci Stults' RBI double that moved Gant to third. Lyndi Hemmelgarn then relieved Stults on second. Both Gant and Hemmelgarn then scored as Emma Sweetman delivered the walk-off two-run single past a diving Adrian shortstop.

In the end, Cap finished with five hits as a unit – two each from Gant and Stults and the winning one from Sweetman.

In the pitcher's circle, Mlinaric tossed seven full innings and allowed just two hits, two runs and four walks all while punching out four Bulldogs.

In game two, the Comets appeared to take the doubleheader sweep thanks to a five-run fifth inning, but a late sixth and seventh inning rally from Adrian led to a 6-5 final score in favor of the visitors.

In the fifth, Capital scored their runs thanks to three straight RBI singles from McKenzie Kennedy, Krislyn Bayles and Emma Gant. Those hits were then followed up with a two-run double from Emma Sweetman

Adrian then scored three in the sixth and two in the seventh to pull off the comeback.

Krislyn Bayles started pitching for Capital and she allowed six hits, four runs (two earned) and one walk across five innings. Megan Mlinaric relieved Bayles and tossed the final two innings of the game, surrendering five hits and two earned runs.
