COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University softball team used a total team effort to sweep Bethany College on Wednesday afternoon thanks to scores of 4-3 and 13-0.
The Comets now even their record at 12-12 overall, while Bethany drops to 24-11.
In the first game, Capital went behind 1-0 in the first inning, but the team responded with four runs in the bottom of the third inning to secure the eventual 4-3 win.
In that third inning, Capital's runs came from an RBI sacrifice bunt by
Rory Littman that scored
Kyleigh Kirby, a sac fly from
Emma Sweetman that scored
McKenzie Kennedy and a two-RBI double by
Krislyn Bayles that scored Littman and
Emma Gant.
All-in-all, the Comets offense was efficient throughout the game, scoring their four runs on five hits and four walks. Two hits came from both
Kyleigh Kirby and
Krislyn Bayles, while
McKenzie Kennedy had the other. Kennedy (2),
Autumn Bridges and
Emma Gant drew the walks.
Bayles also threw in the pitcher's circle, throwing the full seven innings and settling with just four hits allowed, three runs (two earned), two walks and four strikeouts.
During the second game, Capital used two big innings to get the job done in what would be a run-rule shortened game. The team scored three runs in the bottom of the second and then followed it up with a 10-run fourth inning to close out the game 13-0.
Things got started in the second thanks to an RBI single by
Megan Parry. Parry herself then scored on a RBI groundout that
Autumn Bridges reached safely on an error. Then,
Kyleigh Kirby's RBI groundout scored
Larae Portis, putting Capital ahead 3-0.
Two innings later, the Comets batted around and spread the wealth amongst the entire roster as several new faces got in on the mix. First,
McKenzie Kennedy hit an RBI single to score Kirby and Bridges. Then,
Megan Mlinaric hit a two-RBI single that scored
Kelcie Schnitzler and
Tabi Bailey. Shortly after,
Keaura Shilling hit a two-RBI single that scored
Maci Stults and
Madison France. As the inning continued, Bailey recorded an RBI single to short that scored
Hannah St. Clair. Then, to cap it off,
Kelcie Schnitzler delivered a bases-clearing three-RBI triple to seal off the game, 13-0.
Capital collected nine hits and nine walks in game two. The hits came from Bridges, Kirby, Kennedy, Bailey, Schnitzler (2), Mlinaric, Parry and Shilling. The walks came from Bridges (2), Kirby, Kennedy, Mlinaric, Stults,
Larae Portis,
Karri Albertini, and
Hannah St. Clair.
Megan Mlinaric threw four innings of work, allowing just two hits and one strikeout.
Jessica Workman tossed the final frame, walking two, but keeping the scoreboard clean of any Bethany runs.
