COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University softball team dropped two games to Ohio Northern on Saturday by final scores of 8-4 and 11-4.
The results push the Comets back to 10-10 on the year and 5-7 in the conference while the Polar Bears are now 20-10 overall and 9-3 in the OAC.
In game one, the Comets offense struggled to get going for much of the game as they went to the bottom of the seventh inning trailing 8-0. In that frame Cap tried a comeback, scoring four times but ultimately, ONU shut the door to finish off the win.
Capital's four runs came thanks to an RBI single from
Autumn Bridges and a three-run scoring single from
Kyleigh Kirby. The single up the middle scored both
Lyndi Hemmelgarn and Bridges, but an error from the Polar Bear center fielder allowed Kirby to dash around the bases to score herself as well.
In the pitching circle,
Megan Mlinaric was saddled with the loss finishing with 4.2 IP, 9 H, 5 R (4 ER), 3 BB and 3 Ks.
Jessica Workman picked up the final 2.1 innings of relief allowing 3 H, 3 ER, 2 BB and 1 K.
The second game, again, the Comet offense did not offer much throughout the game, but did end up with four runs and nine hits in the end.
In the bottom of the first, Capital plated their first run thanks to a hit-by-pitch and three consecutive walks ending with the RBI walk from
McKenzie Kennedy.
The Polar Bears went up 6-1 in the third, but Capital responded in the bottom half of the inning with runs scored on an RBI sac fly from
Rory Littman and an RBI double from Kennedy.
One inning later,
Kyleigh Kirby delivered an RBI double that scored pinch runner
Tabi Bailey to make the score 6-4.
Unfortunately for Cap, some good relief pitching and strong defense from ONU kept Capital quiet in the scoring department the rest of the way as they scored five more runs of their own.
Krislyn Bayles started the game, lasting 2.1 IP and allowing 9 H and 6 R (5 ER). Mlinaric picked up the relief effort and surrendered 4 H, 5 R (1 ER), 2 BB and 4 Ks in 4.2 IP.
