Softball Drops Two to Wilmington

WILMINGTON, Ohio – The Capital University softball team (10-8, 5-5 OAC) traveled for a twinbill at Wilmington (15-16-1, 3-9 OAC) on Thursday, unfortunately falling in both games, 1-0 in the first and 14-6 in the second.

The first game was a pitchers duel that was not decided until the fifth inning when Wilmington broke the scoreless tie with one run. Despite hitting safely six times, the Comets could not push any runs across and would succumb to a 1-0 losing result.

The second game was a lot more competitive scoring-wise with 20 runs scored in total. Wilmington was first to get on the board, putting up one run in the bottom of the second. CU responded by taking the lead in the top of the third with three runs of their own. The Quakers were quick to bounce back with five more scores in the bottom of the inning, but Cap kept fighting and tied it up by plating three again in the top of the fourth. Sadly, that would be it for the Comets as they stayed scoreless for the remainder of the game. On the other side, Wilmington would score one in the fifth and seven in the sixth to walk off with the run-rule win.

THE NUMBERS
Megan Mlinaric (5-5) was credited with both loses after going all the way in the first game and coming in to pitch to the finish in the second game. All-in-all she pitched for 8.1 innings, allowing four earned runs with four strikeouts and three walks.

Krislyn Bayles started the second game, going 3.1 innings and allowing six earned runs with two strikeouts and four walks.

Lyndi Hemmelgarn reached base safely three times on the day with two hits and one walk, bringing in four runs and scoring one as well.

Kyleigh Kirby knocked in three hits, driving in two runs and scoring one herself.
McKenzie Kennedy had two hits.

Larae Portis, Emma Gant, Reese King, and Rory Littman each recorded one hit. Portis added a walk and crossed the plate twice. Gant got one run scored.
