VERO BEACH, Fla. – The Capital University baseball team (3-5, 0-0 OAC) played a twinbill against Westfield State (5-1, 0-0 MASCAC) on Friday, unfortunately ending up on the wrong side of the scoreboard in both seven-inning games, 3-6 and 2-9.
GAME ONE (CAP 3-6 WSU)
Game one started slow for the Comets as they were held scoreless until the seventh inning. In the meantime, Westfield State built up a six-run lead, scoring two in the third, three in the fourth, and one in the fifth. When Capital got on the board, it came in the form of three runs in the top of the seventh. After working the bases loaded,
Cade Anderson was hit by a pitch bringing in
Max Andrich. The other two runs crossed the plate when
Cole Boroff subsequently singled to center, scoring
Grayson Gulley and
Scott Moats. Unfortunately it was too-little-too-late as with the third out of the inning, Westfield State secured a 6-3 win.
Kyle Bowles (1-1) started on the mound for CU, going three innings with four strikeouts, four earned runs and three walks. He was relieved by
Braden Lewis (1.0 IP, 1 SO, 1 ER, 1 BB),
Daniel Collier (1.0 IP, 1ER), and
Logan Detty (1.0 IP, 1 SO, 1 BB). Detty threw a scoreless inning in what was his collegiate debut.
Boroff went 3-for-4 and recorded two RBIs while
Ryne McKinney went 2-for-3.
Andrich recorded his first career hit, also scoring one run.
Anderson had one RBI.
Gulley and Moats scored one run each.
Moats and
Angelo Rocco both made their first career appearances.
GAME TWO (CAP 2-9 WSU)
Game two started very similar to the first as the Comets found themselves struggling to get on base and score, waiting until the fifth inning to cross the plate for the first time. On the other hand, Westfield State scored two in the top of the third and four in the top of the fifth to gain another six-run lead.
Arnulfo Gonzalez finally got Capital on the board in the bottom of the fifth, singling to left center to score
Ben Stevens. This was followed by
Kielan LaMarr scoring on a bases-loaded balk and making it a 6-2 ballgame. Westfield State would score three more in the top of the seventh while keeping CU scoreless for the remainder of the game, walking away with a 9-2 final.
Trevor Woodyard made the start for the Comets, going four innings with two strikeouts and giving up three earned runs. He was relieved by
Brian Young (1.0 IP, 3 ER),
Jared Carpenter (1.0 IP), and
Adam Frump (1.0 IP, 1 SO, 3 ER, 2 BB). Carpenter made his collegiate debut on the mound, putting up a scoreless inning.
Gonzalez and McKinney recorded the only two hits for Capital, with Gonzalez also getting an RBI.
Xavier Hamid made his first career appearance.
