Baseball Takes Two from Gettysburg and Thiel

VERO BEACH, Fla. – The Capital University baseball team (5-5, 0-0 OAC) wrapped up their spring trip on Saturday with a doubleheader against Gettysburg (2-6, 0-0 Centennial) and Thiel (0-1, 0-0 PAC). The Comets would come away with two wins on the day, defeating Gettysburg 10-4 in the first game, and Thiel 14-8 in the second game.

GAME ONE (CAPITAL 10-4 GETTYSBURG)
Capital's offense came alive in game one, scoring three in the second inning, three in the fourth inning, and three in the sixth inning, along with one in the ninth inning to total 10 on the day. This was more than enough to outmatch the four runs from Gettysburg, who scored one run in each of the first, third, fourth, and fifth innings.

Robby Harrison got things going for the Comets in the second inning with a double to left field that brought in both Arnulfo Gonzalez and Ryne McKinney. Harrison would cross the plate himself following a Grayson Gulley double to left center, moving the scoreline to 3-1 in favor of CU.

In the fourth inning, it was Michael Andryszczyk earning an RBI the hard way with a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch that brought in McKinney. Gulley would then get Gonzalez in with a single to right center, followed by a Cade Anderson sac fly to center that allowed Kielan LaMarr to come across, putting the Cap advantage at 6-2.

The big power play came in the sixth inning with Connor Feeney sending a ball over the left field wall for a three-run homer that plated Cole Boroff and Grayson Gulley and made it a 9-4 ballgame. The Purple and White would score their final run of the outing in the ninth after Andryszczyk grounded into a double play, with Scott Moats scoring in the meantime and bringing the final scoreline to 10-4 in favor of the boys from Columbus.

GAME ONE NUMBERS
Noah Bromberg got the nod for Capital, going three innings while allowing three earned runs with three strikeouts and four walks. He was relieved by Tyler Bebout (1-0) who would get his first career win, working four innings with only one earned run, four strikeouts, and three walks. Logan Detty was the last to pitch for the Comets, handing in a scoreless final two innings with one strikeout and one walk.

Connor Feeney flew the fence for a home run that included three RBIs.

Ryne McKinney went 3-for-5, scoring two runs.

Grayson Gulley had two hits including a double, recording two RBIs and scoring one run.

Cole Boroff also finished with two hits and one run scored, swiping one bag as well.

Arnulfo Gonzalez went 1-for-2 with two HBPs, scoring two runs as well.

Robby Harrison had one hit with two RBIs and one run scored.

Cade Anderson got an RBI via a sac fly. Michael Andryszczyk recorded an RBI via HBP.

Scott Moats came in to pinch run, grabbing one stolen base. He and Kielan LaMarr each scored one run.

GAME TWO (CAPITAL 14-8 THIEL)
The bats remained active in the second game of the day as Capital put up 14 runs, highlighted by a seven-run fourth inning. CU would score one in the second, the aforementioned seven in the fourth, one in both the fifth and sixth, three in the seventh, and one again in the eighth, accumulating 19 hits in total as well. Thiel on the other hand would be held to just three runs until the eighth inning when they scored four, adding another in the ninth to finish with eight on the scoreboard, the Comets taking it in the end, 14-8.

Arnulfo Gonzalez would get the Purple and White on the board in the second inning with a single down the left field line to score Connor Feeney. This was followed by a monster fourth inning in which Capital put seven runs on the board. It all started with Ryne McKinney homering to right field. Next it was Ben Stevens doubling to right center to bring around Kielan LaMarr and Gonzalez. After that, Michael Andryszczyk hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Stevens. Finally – on possibly the craziest play of the afternoon – Feeney doubled to left center, which brought in Cole Boroff. However, when the throw from the outfield flew into the Thiel dugout, Cade Anderson was given a free pass to the plate, along Feeney himself as he was already on his way to third base when he was awarded the extra base due to the ball going out of play, making it 8-2.

The Comets would come across once in both the fifth and sixth, as well as three times in the seventh. In the fifth, Andryszczyk grounded out, scoring LaMarr. In the sixth it was McKinney singling through the left side to score Boroff. Finally, in the seventh, Boroff walked with the bases loaded to bring home Andryszczyk, followed by another Feeney double that brought around Xavier Hamid, and Grayson Gulley. Cap's final run came in the eighth inning after Stevens tripled to right center scoring Brophy, bringing the final scoreline for CU to 14 runs, ending in a 14-8 win for the Purple and White.

GAME TWO NUMBERS
Tyler Sickles (2-1) got the start and the win, going five innings and allowing three earned runs with four strikeouts and one walk. He was relieved by Ben Mohler (2.1 IP, 4 ER, 1 SO, 1 BB), Landon Kim (1.1 IP, 1 ER, 2 SO, 2 BB), and Jared Carpenter (0.1 IP, 1 BB).

Ryne McKinney knocked a ball over the right field fence as part of a two-hit afternoon. He had two RBIs and one run scored.

Connor Feeney, Ben Stevens, and Michael Andryszczyk all turned in three hit outings. Andryszczyk went 3-for-3 adding two RBIs, one run scored, and one stolen base. Both Feeney and Stevens went 3-for-5 with Feeney turning in two doubles, three RBIs, and two runs scored, while Stevens hit a triple and two doubles with three RBIs and one run scored.

Cole Boroff, Arnulfo Gonzalez, and Kielan LaMarr each had two hits. Boroff added one RBI and two runs scored. Gonzalez had one RBI and one run scored. LaMarr scored two runs.

Cade Anderson and Ryan Brophy both had one hit and one run scored, with Brophy also stealing a base.

Grayson Gulley and Xavier Hamid each scored one run.
