VERO BEACH, Fla. – The Capital University baseball team (3-3, 0-0 OAC) took on Delaware Valley (3-5, 0-0 MAC) on Wednesday in a game that started at 1 p.m. in Holman Stadium and finished around 8 p.m. at Field Teamwork due to a nearly four hour rain delay. The Comets secured the win with six runs in the first inning, relying on pitching to go the distance for a 6-5 final score.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The game almost got off to a rough start for Capital in the top of the first as Delaware Valley was able to score one on a sacrifice fly and subsequently load the bases. However, CU starting pitcher
Tyler Bebout was able to work his way out of it, ending the inning on a strikeout and keeping the game at 1-0.
The Comets took advantage of the other side's defensive struggles in the bottom half of the frame, coming around to score six times and make it a 6-1 ballgame. It all started with
Grayson Gulley singling and coming around to score after three wild pitches, the third of which was ball four for
Cade Anderson, 1-1. Anderson repeated the cycle, scoring on three more wild pitches, the third of which walked
Cole Boroff, 2-1. Borroff then stole second and scored after a single from
Connor Feeney, 3-1.
Ryne McKinney and
Gio Mastrorosa would both walk to load the bases and prompt a pitching change. Next,
Michael Andryszczyk singled up the middle, scoring McKinney and Feeney and making it 5-1. Cap crossed the plate one last time after a sac fly in Gulley's second at-bat of the inning scored Mastrorosa, 6-1.
Delval would get one back in the top of the second before three-straight scoreless half-innings led to a 6-2 game at the end of the third. Then the storms rolled into Holman Stadium and prompted a delay, with the game finally getting back underway after nearly four hours and a move to the turf surface of Field Teamwork. DVU got off to a hot start at the new venue, scoring three in the top of the fourth to make it a one-run ballgame at 6-5.
Despite not scoring after the first inning, Capital's pitching staff carried the team to the finish. In particular, it was the efforts of
Ben Mohler and
Landon Kim that made the difference. Mohler was the winning pitcher with 1.2 innings of work with three strikeouts. Kim made his first career save, getting the final 10 outs and striking out three to secure the 6-5 win.
