Softball Drops a Pair to Wittenberg

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – The Capital University softball team traveled to Wittenberg University on Monday afternoon and fell in back-to-back games by final scores of 6-0 and 10-4.

In the first game, Capital (4-2) got off to a slow start, not mustering much momentum from a leadoff single from Autumn Bridges. The Tigers capitalized on the early rut from the Comets and scored four runs in the first and two more in the second. Those runs would hold up as game one ended with a 6-0 final score.

Of Cap's seven hits in game one, Bridges went 3-for-3 and she was joined in the hit column by Rory Littman, Ceilidh Cooper, Reagan Irons and Reese King

Jessica Workman pitched game one, throwing 3.2 innings and being hit with her first loss of the year after conceding the six runs on eight hits and one walk. Krislyn Bayles worked the final 2.1 innings and allowed just two hits.

In the second game, it was Capital who jumped ahead early, thanks to a two-RBI double from Littman in the top of the first. Her hit scored Emma Sweetman and Bridges.

Wittenberg (14-12) answered back with a pair of runs to tie the game in the bottom of the first.

The Comets again went ahead after Capital got a run back from Reagan Irons. Irons first reached base via a sharp hit to right that tipped off the right-fielder's glove before landing safely allowing Irons to get to second. She then moved to third and scored on a wild pitch.

Despite pulling ahead, Wittenberg responded and eventually led by as much as 10-3. In the seventh inning, Rory Littman added her third RBI of the day, scoring pinch runner Lyndi Hemmelgarn from second on a single to left center. Hemmelgarn was running for Megan Parry who had reached via a double earlier in the inning.

Megan Mlinaric got the start in game two, throwing three complete innings before making way for Bayles to toss the final three frames. Both pitchers allowed five hits, while Mlinaric finished with a pair of strikeouts.
