GAMBIER, Ohio – The Capital University softball team ventured to Kenyon College on Wednesday afternoon where they split their doubleheader via scores of 5-1 in the game one win and 4-2 in the game two loss.
Capital now sits 5-3 on the year with conference play starting this Friday. Kenyon is 12-8 on the year.
In the first game, Capital rode the wave of a strong start on the pitching rubber from
Krislyn Bayles who tossed a no-hitter into the fourth inning for the second consecutive start. In total, Bayles would throw seven complete innings and surrender just five hits, one walk and one hit by pitch in the game, allowing just the one run.
Offensively for Capital, the Comets benefited greatly from a two-out error from the Owls in the top of the third inning that allowed the first three runs to score.
Rory Littman reached on an error that allowed
Emma Sweetman to score and continue the inning. In the extended inning,
Reese King singled home
McKenzie Kennedy and Littman then stole home to put Cap ahead 3-0.
Two insurance runs came in the top of the sixth as
Emma Gant tripled to right field, scoring Littman. She then scored on a sac fly from
Reagan Irons.
In game two, Capital jumped in front on two occasions, but could not hang onto the lead as Kenyon emerged with the 4-2 win.
The first run for Cap came early as
Kyleigh Kirby reached safely on a squeeze bunt that scored Littman from third in the top of the first inning. Littman led off the inning with a triple to right field.
After Kenyon leveled the score in the bottom half of the first, Capital went back in front in the top of the fourth inning. This time,
Autumn Bridges delivered the RBI single that scored
Ashley Beane. Beane was pinch running for
Megan Parry who had reached on a double to right center earlier in the inning.
Unfortunately for Cap, the offense fizzled out and the Owls scored two in the bottom of the fifth to secure the win.
Megan Mlinaric started the second game in the pitching circle as she threw 2.2 innings and allowed just three hits, one walk and one run to go with three strikeouts.
Jessica Workman tossed the final 3.1 innings, conceding six hits, three runs and striking out one. The loss sets her back to 0-2 on the season.
