COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University baseball team dropped a pair of home OAC games to Heidelberg University on Sunday afternoon by final scores of 14-2 and 13-9. The Comets are now 6-12 on the year and 0-2 in the conference.
In game one, the Comets got on the board first thanks to a Heidelberg error.
Cole Boroff laid down a sac bunt, but Heidelberg's (14-4, 2-0) third baseman threw the ball away allowing
Ryne McKinney to come around and score.
Despite the early lead, Capital fell behind 10-1 by the middle of the fourth inning. There, the Comets got their second run of the game as
Daylan Barnes' RBI groundout scored
Michael Andryszczyk.
Noah Bromberg started on the hill for the Comets in game one and was hit with the loss after conceding 11 hits and 10 runs in four innings.
In the second game of the day, Capital fell behind early as the Student Princes plated five runs in the first inning and another in the second to lead 6-0. In the bottom of the second, Capital struck for two runs, thanks to RBIs from Andryszczyk and Barnes.
Heidelberg responded by adding seven runs to their score, leading 13-2 heading to the bottom of the eighth. In that frame, Capital began to mount a comeback, started by a towering two-run home run from
Angelo Rocco. The freshman pinch hitter sent a lofted ball over the foul pole in left to get things going to the Comets.
The homer was followed by RBIs from
Ben Stevens, Barnes, and McKinney. All but one of the eighth inning runs came in unearned fashion thanks to a few Berg errors.
In the ninth, Cap continued their comeback bid, with RBIs from
Kielan LaMarr and Stevens, but ultimately they wound up short, 13-9.
The Comets' starter in game two was
Trevor Woodyard who picked up the loss after surrendering five runs on three hits and three walks in the first inning.
