COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Capital University softball team continued winning ways this afternoon, defeating Oberlin College by scores of 11-10 and 11-0. The pair of wins improved the Comets' record to 4-0 with all four wins coming having scored 11 runs.
In game one, the Comets benefitted from a three-run bottom of the seventh inning to secure the first win, with the final two runs being scored on an Oberlin error. In the second game, Cap controlled the offense from the start, eventually run-ruling the Yeowomen 11-0 in just five innings.
GAME ONE
The Comets controlled much of the game, leading 7-5 after the fourth inning, but a late slip-up allowed Oberlin to lead 10-8 heading to the bottom of the seventh inning.
In that final frame, Capital got the inning started with a pinch-hit base hit from
Megan Parry. After a flyout,
Reese King laced a double to right center that scored pinch-runner
Larae Portis from first base.
Then, a dropped pop up from the Oberlin short stop kept the inning alive and put
Autumn Bridges on safely. With two outs,
Kyleigh Kirby legged out an infield single to load the bases. With the final swing of the bat,
Emma Sweetman sent a sharp grounder to the Yeowomen short stop who mishandled the grounder, allowing both Bridges and
Kelcie Schnitzler to come home with the tying and winning runs.
GAME TWO
A slow first inning was met with a huge five-run inning in the bottom of the second by the Comets offense. With
Krislyn Bayles pitching a gem on the mound, the Comets struck for five runs thanks to an RBI single by Bridges, an advantageous two runs scored on an error, and then a two-run home run from
Emma Sweetman.
With the momentum fully in their sails, the Comets again struck big, this time plating six runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.
In that frame, Cap scored runs on an RBI double by
Rory Littman, an RBI single by
Megan Parry, an RBI single from
Reagan Irons, a squeeze bunt by
Autumn Bridges, a bases-loaded walk from
McKenzie Kennedy and a sac fly from Kirby.
The damage was enough to end the game early as Oberlin went quietly in the top of the fifth inning, sealing the run-rule victory for Cap.
